not including indivisual gigs... January 1978 marked the Pistols meeting with the American south, and we were not that friendly to them! I have talked to many people in my city whom I know well that had gone to the Pistols gig at the Cains who confirmed everything I'd ever heard about. The Sex Pistols had never played America, and allready the punk explotion was happening over here due to obsessive rumors of violence and more from the tabloids. Jan. 3 - the Sex Pistols arrived in New York, met by Noel Monk. By this time the Pistols work permits are allready in jepordy Jan. 5 - the Pistols fly to Atlanta, Geogia for the 1st date at the Southeast Music Hall in Atlanta. Jan. 6 - the Pistols flew to Memphis, Tennessee for the next date, and the plane is struck by lightening! Also on the 6th, Tom Forcade joined the tour so he could work on filming for his film DOA. Jan. 7 - the head to San Antonia, but make a stop at Austin, Texas first, where Sid hits a cowboy over the head with a bass guitar. Jan. 8 - Pistols play San Antonia at Randy's Rodeo. Jan. 9 - Pistols play Kingfish Club in Baton Rouge (Louisianna). the Pistols even make newspaper headlines in Texas and they read "Pistols win San Antonia shootout" Jan. 10 - probably the most famous US date (besides Winterland). Pistols play live at the Longhorn. Many injuries insued, including Sid's self destruction with glass on his own chest writing "Gimme a fix". Hellen Keller (who had made the journey with the other key San Fransisco Sheepunks to the show) head buts him Jan. 12 - The Pistols play Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma. To quote a friend of mine who went to the show, "Tulsa was not ready for the Sex Pistols!" And very true to that! Tulsa was more of a southern rock and blues dominated city at the time, artists like Eric Clapton were acceptable in the town, not the Pistols. Protests insued, a baptist pastor insued. (yes, many of those bastards still around here). This would be the last show before the Winterland Jan. 13 , the group didn't see eachother fully. Steve and Paul were traveling by plane to see the country and John was elsewhere. Jan. 13 - it's announced on the radio that the show will start at 5 PM and will feature Bay Area Punk Bands (which were exploding at the time). The Pistols were scheduled to appear at midnight and K-SAN was to carry the show. Steve and Paul go to K-SAN and are interviewed, callers call in asking dumb question like "are you anyhow related to fascism?" Jan. 14 - K-SAN is greeted by Sid and John to do that famous long interview you can hear on Carri On. Also, which really encompases the stupidity and destruction of the sheepunk movement - Sid stays at the Haight Ashbury after having been mostly clean from Heroine and gets smacked up by Bay Area Punk whores. He overdoses Winterland - Jan. 14 Live at the Winterland in San Fransisco is one of the most depressing things I have ever seen. The show is horrible, no one is enthusiastic, and John looks more fed up and desperate than he ever has. 5,000 seats sell out the Winterland making it the biggest concert the boys have played. Bay Area bands the Nuns and the Avengers open for the Pistols, and of course sheepunk legends like Darby Crash and John Doe are at the concert. The Film "Sex Pistols number 1" which had been worked on since the Screen on the Green" is shows before the show. The show is horrible, even classics like Belsen was a Gas, Problems, and Bodies, are offkey and depressing. For an enchore, the Pistols come back on. Their last song is No Fun, which drags on endlessly, with John stopped before its over to announce in the middle of the song "oh Bollocks, why should I carry on! This is no fun, at all!" and at the end marks the unofficial breakup of the Pistols when John announces to the crowd, although directed at the band "Ever Get the Feeling you've been cheated?" They had been cheated, out of money, privacy, and most of all their adolcence. Jan. 15 - Sid says to John that he's fed up with the band and him. John and Sid's tension together is too much to bear, and for the time and situation they are now ex-best friends.. Jan. 17 - John is fed up. He tries to get a room but cant then goes to Steve and Paul to try and convince them to leave Malcolm and carry on without. They refuse . John, Steve, and Paul go up to Malcolms room to try and figure it all out, but Steve announces "I'm Fucking pissing off!" Paul follows, and the Pistols are over. Jan. 18 - the Public breakup of the Sex Pistols. by the New York Post. |
