1976

1976 was the year when originality in an unnamed London music mecca would flourish. The Sex Pistols were gaining respectablity in the English music cult from people fed up with a system that did nothing for them. Although many people believe that the July UK Ramones tour from CBGB was to be responsible for the British punk movement, the Pistols had already established themselves by this time and planted the seed of tearing down an old system and creating your own rules. Some key bands that would lead to a massive bandwagon across the world would either debut or be completely changed by the Pistols this year. The Clash, who would enhanse the political side of punk, would make their debut at a Pistols gig, soon to be managed by Malcolm's comrade Bernie Rhodes. The Buzzcocks, who would restablish a do-it-yourself ethic among music production and labels, would also debut. And the Damned, who, er, were just an odd gothy type band with only a couple good songs and bad haircuts, would do their thing as well! People were thinking for themselves and not following blindly. here is a short biography of 1976 and I mean short! Don't take all the dates eriously because they have NOT been double checked. This biography was written in a very short amoung of time.

ALL TOUR DATES
not including indivisual gigs...

Febuary - Feb. 12 76 ' Pistols play the Marque backing Eddie and the Hotrods. The gig is reported in the NME, but the headline for the show is "Don't look over your shoulder but the Sex Pistols are coming" The show is a disaster - John wrecks the Hot Rods new monitors, and according to Paul Grey the headlines read "Rods v. Pistols".
Feb. 20 - 76' - Pistols play High Wycomb.

March - March. 30' 76 - Pistols play 100 Club (which they would make home in Sept. 76')

April - April 3' 76' - Play the Nashville w/ the 101ers (allready established London pub-rock band at the time, Joe Strummer says he quit the band because of his hearing the Pistols play at the 100 Club. RIP Joe!)
April 4' 76 - gigs are already hard to find! Malcolm has to rent out a "venue" in Soho for 100 bucks. In reality, it is a strip club of sorts called "El Pradiso". To read an article about the show, click here
In April, the first full article would be written about the Pistols in Sounds. To see a transcript of it, click Here. It was the April gigs that would lead the NME starting the rumor about the violence at Pistols gigs.

May - May 20 - the Pistols begin making demos with Chris Spedding. Also a genuine raw quality is present in the Spedding demos, they are still nothing compared to the Goodman demos that will be responsible for swading EMI into signing them.

July - The next producer used would be Dave Goodman, who would record rough Pistols demos in Riverside Studios (and later in January after Glen was fired). Raw versions (4 or 5 each) of Anarchy in the UK, Pretty Vacant, Seventeen, Satelite, Problems, I Wanna be Me, and Submission. These demos, released on the bootleg "NO Future UK" under false name "Spunk", was the place to find them in 77', but they are now available on a CD collection called "This is Crap" released in the late 90s which I highly recommend buying.
Now, in July. the Pistols would play three gigs at the Screen on the Green in Islington, where bands like the Clash and Buzzcocks would back them up. if you look at it a certain way, is one of the main reasons Punk exploded. Many key people had seen that show, including EMI A&R (ARTISTS AND REPERTORY) people.

September - Sept. 4th - THe Pistols make their television debut on "So it Goes", promoting Anarchy in the UK. The preformance is riviting, and although clips are fairly easy to find - I do recommend finding the entire spot.
After the SOTG, the Pistols then made home with the 100 Club in Sept. 76. In Sept. 23, 76', Malcolm officially created "Glitterbest Lmt." which would end up in an endless legal dispute with John and the rest of the living band after the breakup. On Sept. 17th, the Pistols would play live at Chelmsford Maximum Security prison, which would be recorded by Dave Goodman. While this recording is fairly easy to find, if you are looking for a live PIstols recording... this is not a good one to blow a few dollars on.

October - Well, Mike Thorne had pushed Nick MObbs to sign the pistols after hearing the Goodman demos, and the Screen on the Green boot called "Indecent Exposure" had hit the black market - and on Oct. 8, 76, EMI signed the pistols for 40,000 pounds
October was a month for production. The contract with EMi was big news and a single now needed to be released. The Pistols would find themselves at Wessex with David Goodman once again, and then with Chris Thomas.

Novermber - after being signed, if October was a month for production, Novermber would be a month for television. the Pistols made a few key television appeances including the London Weekly Show on Nov. 14, and the BBC's nationwide appearance on Nov. 12.
Nov. 6 - Sex Pistols are on the front cover of Melody Maker. They will have the same occurance on the 27th with their first Caroline Coon interview
Nov. 19 - Anarchy in the UK is now the official debut single by the band. It is a simple

December - The Sex Pistols are real people, not rockstars. Well, being the ba-stards they are, Dec.1 76, the Pistols got an off-change spot on television with Bill Grundys Today Show after Queen wasn;t available, where, er, various words insued making them national enemies over night because Jonsey calling Grundy a "dirty old man, a dirty bastard, a rotter," Click here for a transcript and audio link to the interview. The press exploded, rumos were ensued, and even tabloid stories like a man kicking in his television screen because he was so upset by hearing the language because his kid was in the room. The problem with this appearance was that The Pistols were scheduled to embark on the Anarchy tour in Dec. 76, but it was quickly reduced to 3 dates by Dec. 6. On Dec. 9th, the crappy ass Buzzcocks replaced the crappyass Damned on the tour right before they played the Electric Circus in Manchester. These few dates would at least get the ball rolling a little more.
December finds the Pistols recording tracks No Feelings, God Save the Queen, Liar and Problems with Mike Thorne
