Cordillera Blanca - Day 3
On our last day in the area, we joined another guided bus-tour with Peru tours. We approached Peru's heighest mountain, Huascaran (6768 m.a.s.), which was unfortunately mostly shadowed by white clouds. After having visited the memorial site of a horrible 1970's avalanche catastrophe we started to gain height towards the Llanganuco lake located between two of Peru's heighest mountains, Nevado Huandoy (6395 m.a.s.) and Nevado Huascaran Norte (6655 m.a.s.). Look!
The lake was beautifully located (see views of Huandoy above) and Huascaran (right), but the rather bad weather and too short time at the location made this last day to somewhat of a disappointment. A really bad meal in Caraz, our northernmost destination in South America (touchdown in Bogota excluded), together with a Japanese descendant from Lima, completed the adventures in Cordillera Blanca. Back in Huaraz we checked out from the hotel and grabbed a night bus to Lima. Taking night buses in Peru was something we had decided to avoid prior to the journey. At this moment, however, we had lost all respect for Peru and started to consider night bus as an economical way of travelling. The loss of view from the bus window was compensated by the earning in time. Nevertheless, approaching Callao, the northern suburb of Lima, at 3 o'clock in the morning, being unaware of what would happen next, made some cold shivers run down our backs. In fact, well back in Lima we were able to sit inside a guarded outdoor area for two hours before leaving Lima (see below) for the coastal town towards the south, Pisco.
