Inka Trail - Day 2
BACK TO OVERVIEW
After some pain and headache we reached the first pass at 4200 m.a.s., and could witness the next valley ahead of us. We lost a lot of height before stopping for food intake and sun exposure in the bottom of this valley.
Then we set off for the next uphill challenge (see right). We rested shortly at a small ruin and continued towards the second pass that was preceded by two small lakes. A number of carriers rested on top of the hill. It almost seemed as if there were more carriers than tourists on the trail. Now we lost height again, passing a swampy lake, and then reaching an awesome ruin. It was strategically placed on a ridge with a grandiose valley of cloud forrest below. The half-pipe leading water to the ruin was a work of art by itself. After having enjoyed this site for just a little to short time, we continued down the valley to the next resting-place where we cooked a descent meal of pasta. The sun was burning in the afternoon and we decided to go on. This part of the trail was definitely the most enjoyable. A perfectly constructed Inca road, including a tunnel through the mountain and vast cloud forests, occasionally on both sides while walking on a ridge, really made an impression. The sun was clearly on its way down when we reached the last pass of the trail.
We wanted to find a good camping place, but got scared away when some carriers went for a pee on some tent. We also wanted to find drinking water, which unfortunately wasn't availabe on top of the ridge. In a way it was sad to continue because the views from this last official camping site were gorgeous, both back towards the valley that we came from (see above) and towards the ruin that we soon would pass on our way down the valley (see to the left). We hurried on towards a youth hostal and managed to reach it just before dark. The place was stuffed with tourists and tents, but there was a tiny space that was just enough to pitch our Fjllrven tent on. 7UP felt exquisite after a long day.
