Host Families :
1. The most important component in your exchange year is probably your host family. Having a good relationship with your host family will make your exchange year a great year but if you do not get along too well with your host family, that may just break your exchange year. 2. To avoid having problem with your host families, where normally bigger conflicts arises from small problems, try to avoid having any small misunderstanding with your host family. 3. The easiest and most effective way to avoid small conflicts is to ask what you can do, what you cannot do and what you can help at home during the first night itself. A simple gesture like this goes a long way. 4. You must also remember that things that you normally do at home which is normal to you might just be offensive to your host families, so do make sure of everything first. 5. Ask for permission before using anything even if they say you can use everything you like. Remember also to say the two magic words 'Thank You' after each time you use something. 6. A group of magical word is Thank You and Sorry, after every help received, no matter how big or small it is, remember to say the magical 'Thank You'. And whenever you do something wrong, no matter how small it is, don't forget to say a big 'Sorry'. Sounds simple but just remember to do it regularly. 7. Usage of telephone especially long distance call must first be asked for permission before doing it.Best is to count how long you had made the call and add up the cost of the call and offer to pay them accordingly. 8. Remember to keep your host family inform of your movement. This is even so when you had to come back a little late so that your host parents will not be too worried for you. Also if you are back home rather late, try not to make too much noise. Don't wake the others up.
School :
1. If you are going to a country where you don't speak their language, then school is probably the place where you are going to really learn the language. It is because you can really picked up the language fast if you speak to the other students in the school in their language. Of course in the beginning, you can try to communicate in a language which both of you are familiar at for example English but make sure to speak in their language later. 2. School may be a little boring for you in the beginning if you don't understand a word of what they said. School will be just like going to a classroom and sit for five hours or longer and back home. This may be true but later whne you do understand the language, then school will be probably one of the most interesting place to be at. 3. Make a serious attempt to learn what the teachers are teaching. Of course nobody is expecting you to be the best but do try and participate in the class. 4. Examinations may be boring for exchange students because you have nothing to do during that time. You have nobody to talk to so to cure boredom during examinations, write the test or examinations with the other students. The teacher are ever happy to mark what you have written. Some may even get a shocked if you did just as well as the other students. This is really satisfying, so if possible try and write the tests too, you'll never know what you'll gonna get.
Going Home :
| 1. Preparation to go home is probably one of the highlights in an exchange students year. 2. The problem with most exchange student is, their luggage tends to grow. Most exchange students went to their host country with their luggages within the weight limit allowed. But as time passes, their luggage get bigger and heavier and ended up exceeding the weight limit set by the airline. 3. Dont be worried about the over-weight luggage, as this is very normal among exchange students. Although this isnt a problem to be worried about but do remember to act fast. 4.
