A (Very) Brief History of WineArchaeologists have found evidence suggesting that people began producing wine around 8000 BCE. The oldest winery was possibly found in Armenia in a cave containing wine jugs and glasses, grape presses, and reminants of grapes themselves. However, it does not mean that wine was exclusively invented there. Many cultures around the world and throughout history had developed wine or some kind of alcohol on their own. European wines survived an outbreak of disease in the late 1800's, brought on by beetles that many believe were brough over on ships from the Americas. This left only the best and strongest plants, helping to shape the highest quality wines that we have in the world. Disease was not the problem in the United States; it was Prohibition. While some wineries survived by producing for churches, most wine grapes in the US were planted after Prohibition ended, making them relatively young in the wine world.
