400. LT. James Permenter
Sr.(78) was born in 1710 in Edgecombe
Co., NC. It is possible that his father changed the spelling of the name from
Parmentier to Permenter due to the oppression suffered by the family because
of their Hugonot heritage. He owned Estate & Farm in 1741 in Edgecombe Co.,
NC.(79) The listing here is for JAMES
PARMONTER. Again an obvious spelling error, probably on the part of the Tax
Records Clerk. He served in the military in 1754 in Edgecombe Co., NC.
(80) served as an officer with the rank of
LT. He is listed as #2 in the muster list, on 25 Nov 1754. He served with Lt.
Col. Solomon Alston's Company as his Chief of Staff. Representing Edgecombe Co.
NC, he served well to his country. Jay K. Griffin feels that James was a CAPT.
instead of a LT.
He died on 10 Jul 1789 in Edgecombe Co., NC.(81)
He was a Blacksmith, Farmer in Edgecombe Co., NC. The Surname PARMENTER
will also be spelled PERMENTER. It is unclear as to the cause of this variation.
There seems to be little doubt that James' family came from Isle of Wight, VA.
If this can be validated, then the proposed connection to Jean Parmentier, &
Guillaume de Parmentier will be much easier. He was married to Margaret Murre\Murray
in 1735 in Edgecombe Co., NC.(82)
