Specifically, during a recent shareholders meeting Sato-san said, "We want to develop the Southeast Asian market, including China, in addition to our current domestic, U.S. and European markets." Sega believes the Chinese market has huge potential given its massive population. Sega hopes the recent release of the PlayStation 2 in Taiwan and Korean, and Microsoft's plans to release the Xbox in several Southeast Asian countries in the coming months will build support for software developers.10/8/02* *Sega subsidiary Spherion reportedly faces a legal battle in Florida over allegations that the company fired 12 game testers because they were Filipino. According to the court filing, Spherion provided the workers to test games for Sega in San Francisco and was also named in the lawsuit citing violations by U.S. Labor Regulators. The decision to take legal action was reportedly initiated after several attempts to settle the dispute privately, according to lead attorney Cindy O'Hara. After an employee complained to Sega that Filipino testers were getting preferential treatment, Sega fired him, four of his friends, and 12 testers, O'Hara said. Fears regarding the company's current market price and recent purchase volume reportedly influenced UBS Warburg's decision to downgrade the company to 'Reduce' status. Shares of the company closed at 2,290 yen yesterday, which is still higher than USB Warburg's suggested 2,100 yen target price on the stock. In a similar move earlier this week, Morgan Stanley cut its rating on Sega reportedly due to sluggish sales of NFL2K3.10/1/02* *The NPD Group released its platform lists of the top selling games for the month of August today. However due to the high demand they will begin the production again but only if they receive at least 1,000 customer preorders by the end of September.
