| Article of the Month: Games that Never Saw the Light (Part 1) (Oct - Nov) |
| In this months article I will discuss games that because Sega going 3rd party and stopping Dreamcast production never saw the light of day. The reasons vary from fearing low sales; poor quality to 9/11 but one thing is the same they were never released. Page: 1 , 2 , 3 White and Black A port of the popular PC game, Black and White casts the player as a powerful sorcerer king, ruling over the variously populated towns on a picturesque island. Based around historical human races, such as Vikings, Egyptians, and Aztecs. Villagers of the island don't know have an innate concept of good or evil, living instead in a neutral world without any wars and hunger. Someone needs to enforcer your ways. Unlike previous efforts, your godlike control of the world will now have some a direct impact via your little helper, known as a "creature." Your primary method of influence stems from this monstrous animal that is your personal beast, developing traits and tendencies based on your actions as the leader of your people. Your sorcerer's magical powers will start to increase when you treat, punish and teach the villagers. The type of power brought by the population varies depending on the tribe from which they hail. For example while Aztecs may provide you with defense magic, Zulu's aid the cause with a contribution of combat spells. Balancing your powers will be a key to success in the game, and will fluctuate depending on where you are at in the game, and exploring all the possible options will be a big part of game play. According to the player's behavior, the creature's appearance and that of the entire world in Black and White changes to reflect the state of play. Be a consistently happy camper, and watch your kingdom develop into a fairy-tale realm full of jolly citizens. By the same token, when you always pound and punish your villagers, both the monster and the world around it will twist and blacken, reflecting all the nasty feelings as part of its continual its metamorphosis This game was also is going to have great online play. You would connect to gate system similar to PSO, meet people and battle your two tribes against each other But why was it cancelled? News of this title was first confirmed in February 2000. It was originally intended to be a Sega Net launch title for the Dreamcast in America in Fall 2000. In July 2000 the title was pushed back to Q2 of 2001, for an unknown reason. But then in May 2001 around the time of the unnamed release date Sega decides to not publish it with fears of poor sales. While it was possible to have another publisher publish it, the Dreamcast was to far gone at that time no one would. It was a big mistake and no doubt would have been one of the best Dreamcast games and hype, name and popularity would have given it good sales. The following are pictures from the game: |
