History
Many Native American tribes, including the Nez Perce, Spokan, Yakima, Cayuse, Okanogan, Walla Walla, and Colville, were already living in the area when Spain's Bruno Hezeta sailed the coast in 1775.
British naval officer George Vancouver arrived in 1792 to map the Puget Sound area.
That same year, American Capt. Robert Gray sailed up the Columbia River.
In 1810, Canadian fur traders set up Spokane House.
Under John Jacob Astor, Americans established a post at Ft. Okanogan in 1811.
In 1836, Missionary Walt Whitman settled near Walla Walla.
In 1846, final agreement on the border of Washington and Canada was made with Britain.
Washington became part of the Oregon Territory in 1848.
In 1855, Gold was discovered.
