Courage  in  Three  Persons

To bear the Dark Lord's Ring
Knowing it will devour:
Steeling yourself to walk into his shadow,
Hopeless and starving, robbed of light and reason,
Evading his malice only so to perish
If ever you can cast it
Into the Crack of Doom.

To stay beside him --
However your heart may crack to stay beside him,
Through terror and hunger, thirst and bitter pain.
Never to leave him, never, though you perish
Together with him,
Faithful unto death.

To keep on going --
Staying the course through pain that burns like fire
Gnawing the heart's core where you cannot reach it,
Trusting the One you cannot see to bring you
Someday to somewhere
Where it's all worthwhile.
