INFORMATION & GUIDELINES for Laptop / Computer Tip #1 - Keep the air flowing. TIP #1: Keep the air flowing. A clean PC is a happy PC. Computer systems today generate tremendous amounts of heat. Do not place your computer near a wall or pile items around the base of the computer, because this will restrict air from flowing into the computer causing the system to operate at high temperatures, leading to poor performance and premature failure of components. Most processors today have a heat sink and cooling fan placed on it to keep it cool. The power supply on the back of your computer also has a fan to keep air flowing throughout the case. Over time, dust and dirt can accumulate inside your computer creating all kinds of problems, if not taken care of properly. ResourcePC offers a service plan where we will come out to your home or office and clean the dust and grime off your internal fans and components. Tip #2 - Use a surge protector. TIP #2 : Use a surge protector. Surge protectors are special power strips with protected outlets and phone jacks designed to absorb power surges. High voltage spikes in a power line can severely damage memory chips and other system components. ResourcePC suggests that you shut your system completely down and unplug all components during a thunderstorm. Lightning hitting power lines can send enormous amounts of power across the lines and into your system. ResourcePC recommends APC products for all surge protectors and UPS. Tip #3 - Use anti-virus software. TIP #3 : Use anti-virus software. The number of computer viruses spreading across the Internet has increased tremendously over the last couple of years. Executing files containing viruses can cause serious damage to your data and your system. Purchase and install an anti-virus program that monitors email, scripts, and files being saved to your drives. ResourcePC recommends Norton System Works. Tip #4 - Don't delete files you're unsure about. TIP #4 : Don't delete files you're unsure about. Many people are tempted to delete files to "clean up" their hard drives. In doing so, they often delete critical system files resulting in programs not working properly or the system not starting at all. If you are unsure whether the file is needed or not, it is best to leave it there. Tip #5 - Run ScanDisk and Defrag your hard drive on a monthly basis. TIP #5 : Run ScanDisk and Defrag on a monthly basis. Defrag will optimize your hard drive so the files are always grouped together instead of being spread all over your hard drive, and Scandisk will look for any errors on the hard drive and attempt to repair them. To run these tools, open up "my computer", right click on the hard drive icon and then select properties. In this window select tools, first run Error-Checking Status ( ScanDisk ) to find any errors and then run Defragmentation Status ( Defrag ) to optimize your hard drive. Tip #6 - Install a firewall if you are using a high-speed Internet service. TIP #6 : Install a firewall if you are using a high-speed Internet service. Having a constant connection to the Internet increases the vulnerability of your computer to hackers. There are many people on the Internet searching for exploitable communication channels. Protect your computer with a firewall. A firewall program keeps unwanted guests from gaining access to your system. There are some free personal firewalls that are available for individual use. Check out Zone Alarm, Outpost, or Sygate for personal firewalls. Tip #7 - Never unplug peripherals from a computer that is powered on. TIP #7 : Never unplug peripherals from a computer that is powered on. Unplugging a peripheral (ie. scanner, printer, keyboard, etc) while the power is on can short out the connector socket or the motherboard. Tip #8 - Always shut down Windows before turning off the power. TIP #8 : Always shut down Windows before turning off the power. While Windows is running, it keeps several important files open. Shutting down properly gives Windows an opportunity to save these files. If it is not shut down, errors can occur in these files making Windows unstable, or recent changes can be discarded. To shut down your computer, click on START > SHUT DOWN
