Lesson 9: Sharing with School Community - Part 2

This lesson provides another opportunity to share and further develop positive school community.

Objective:
Students will share ideas with the school community by collaborating with their second grade buddies and writing a book. They will also create posters to be displayed around cafeteria.

Materials:
Construction paper, markers, pencils, crayons
Spiral bound book binder
Laminator

Procedure:
1. Fifth grade students will work with second grade reading/bus buddies to write and illustrate a book titled "Being a Peacemaker" which highlights conflict resolution techniques. The book will be spiral bound, laminated and displayed in the school library.

Note: Being a Peacemaker book ideas:
Instruct students to work with buddies designing two pages for the "Being a Peacemaker" book.
First page - "In Our School Community, Children Sometimes Argue When..."
Children should illustrate typical school conflict situations. They may select one from the list below, or develop their own scenario. Make sure their selection is approved by a teacher before they begin designing the first page.
-- playing a game in school
-- someone plays with a toy you want to play with
-- someone calls you a name
-- someone cuts in front of you in the cafeteria line
-- someone pushes or shoves you
-- someone teases you on the school bus
-- some makes fun of the way you look
-- someone takes something that belongs to you
-- someone talks about you behind your back
-- someone says something nasty about your friend
Second Page - "This is How We Resolve Our Differences"
For this page the text and illustration should reflect a peaceful resolution to the scenario in first page. Again, this should be approved by teacher before students begin designing the page.

2. Fifth grade students will create positive character trait posters which will be displayed around the cafeteria.

Evaluation:
When the teacher meets with students to approve their book ideas, observe that students are able to employ conflict resolution techniques taught in previous lessons
