When I was an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin, I majored
in East Asian Studies. Though this was a very interdisciplinary
major, I concentrated mostly on Chinese language and East Asian history.
I nearly decided to spend time in Taiwan or mainland China in 1987,but
because I really couldn't afford it I decided to wait until I graduated
in December 1988 before going.
In the summer
of 1987 I was more or less offered a position as an English teacherat
a language school in Xian (mainland China). I have always wanted
to see Xian, but because the school wanted a firm one year commitment,
I decided against going there. Many people told me it was very
easy to just go to Taiwan and find a job, however, so I decided to do
that. I went to Taipei in January of 1989, and stayed there for about
five months.
Some of the
pictures here have rather uninformative descriptions. Hey, it has been
over 12 years since I was there, though, so please cut me a bit of slack
on this. If and/or when my memory is jogged a bit I will make
improvements to those descriptions...
