White Tiger Koryo Gumdo |
White Tiger Koryo Gumdo might be the first Sword fighting style in Kansas. We are working very hard to bring this style to you. White Tiger first started weapons training with an Aikido school in Wichita. Although it was a Kendo style, the cuts and swordmanship is very similar. USNTF now sponsors our training along with its affiliate the World Koryo Gumdo Association. WKGA is represented by Grandmaster J.P. Wood and he oversees our efforts to teach you KG. He also oversees the ranking and belt testing. Although he is in Illinois and we are here in Kansas, we try to keep things consistant with his school because that is who will be testing our students out to blackbelt. |

Koryo Gumdo meets every Saturday. We train with a wooden sword called a boken. Check out the White Tiger Store for all your Gumdo needs. We wear a traditional hakama pants and jacket with the corresponding belt. The uniform is $100.00 but a substitute uniform of black Kung Fu pants and the White Tiger tee shirt can be worn for non-tournament students. The class consists of fencing techniques used with a Shinai or Bamboo sword. The sparring is done with padded swords and the rules and regulations for sparring will be conducted and learned in class. Each belt has its own form and cutting techniques. |

Rec Center classes are integrated into the advanced class where at the end of the session we hold a mock-tounrament and give out medals for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. Gumdo is new to our school and I hope that the Hapkido and Gumdo classes become as important if not more to our way of life and our style. As for the life and the way we need to live it, it is imparative that the Gumdo student learns the Ethic Codes of the Hwarang, and HwarangDo. HwarangDo means the way of the Blossoming Flower, or the way in which we grow. Gumdo students should learn to live the life |

of a Hwarang Warrior. We also accept the seven principles of the Samurai. Honesty and Justice, Heroic Courage, Duty and Loyalty, Honor, Compassion, Complete Sincerity, Polite Courtesy. Our Gumdo will hold no ones style more important than anothers. If we can learn from it, we will use it. Within this class you will learn to use other weapons: The 4' jo staff, the nunchucka, the escrima stick and the kubaton. However the majority of the class emphasis will be the sword and cutting techniques. |
