Perry Presbyterian

Perry Presbyterian, Jefferson County, PA

This church was organized on May 2, 1835, by a committee from the Presbytery of Blairsville, which had jurisdiction over the neighborhood at that time. The committee consisted of Rev. John D. Reed and Rev. E.D. Barrett. The church was organized with 21 charter members with William Stunkard, Stephen Lewis and Samuel Kelly being elected and installed Ruling Elders.

September 4 1836, the date given in McKnight's Jefferson Co History is not the organization date but the date of the first baptismal service . Those baptised were Adult Robert Gaston, Lydia Jane Lewis daughter of Stephen and Jane Lewis and Margaret Manners daughter of Joseph and Jane Manners.

The first church, a log structure, was built in 1835. In 1862 the church was incorporated. In 1869 a comfortable parsonage surrounded by several acres of ground was built. In 1878 the log church was replaced with a new structure. (the one in the above picture) In 1949 the church was struck by lightening and burned to the ground. On April 19, 1950 the members decided not to rebuild and to use the money from the insurance company to set up perpetual care for the cemetery which was then named Perry Memorial Cemetery.
