Hopewell United Methodist, Frostburg, Jefferson County, PA

This church at Frostburg (formerly Pottersville) was organized in 1837 by Elijah Coleman a local pastor. The original 5 members were Henry & Barbara Palmer, Abraham & Catherine Shaffer DeHaven and Mrs. J. Martin. In 1839 five members of the Daniel Swisher family joined and Daniel Swisher donated an acre of ground on which a log church was built in 1841. More land was donated for the cemetery in later years by William McKee, Clarence Mitchell, Thomas Mitchell and John Newbold.

The present church was built in 1871. Over the years Hopewell has belonged to the Redbank, Mahoning, Punxsutawney, Ringgold, Walston and Frostburg circuits. It is presently part of the Valier Charge which also includes the Valier and Hamilton United Methodist Churches.

The Hopewell Cemetery is the burial place of many Jacob Mauk descendants including those in the Jacob B., Henry, Isaac, John, Eve and Catherine branches.
