| My Thoughts on George Orwell's 1984 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| This book really makes me think about how personal thoughts and beliefs are so important to being human. The fact that people can control their own minds, emotions, and ideas gives them personality and shows their inner souls. Originally 1984 was going to be called The Last Man in Europe reflecting how Big Brother has control over every aspect of existance, down to every last thought a given person might have. Winston was essentially the "last man in Europe" in that he was the only one who believed "down with Big Brother" and was inwardly against everything it stood for. It shows that he still is 'human' though he is still under some from of BB control. He knew sooner or later that thought would be discovered by the Thought Police, and he would literally be erased from history. One of Orwell's points in this book is that society will inevitably fall under complete control by some form of government or group if people let them little by little. The way we use language is extremely important in this matter because the meaning of words matter in the way we think and use them. When we take language for granted complete concepts and thoughts will have different, if not opposite, meanings. Belief systems like democracy, peace, religion, and justice won't mean what they mean today. Orwell uses the mottos of Big Brother to demonstrate the power of thought: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. We need to stay human by not only having beliefs and opinions but expressing them and standing behind them whether others agree or not. This raises another question though: Is Big Brother in the right then for believing in power for the sake of power, using it to control society? I suppose no idea that powerful should overtake the ideas of others, but there are a lot of questions that arise from 1984 that have no definite answer. |

| It was pretty scary how Big Brother used torture to completely strip down Winston and then let him recover again, only to torture him further. They were able to change Winston's very thoughts so that in the end he truly loved Big Brother. Is it possible for this to happen in real life? I don't want to find out... |
