In the end of George Orwell's 1984, Winston said and truly believed he loved Big Brother. The "last man in Europe" was tortured to the point of re-establishing his personal beliefs, for example in the beginning where he cumpulsively wrote in his journal "Down With Big Brother." How could such a thing happen? Is mind control really possible? With all that torture, I would rather die than become the enemy, but O'Reily made it so that Winston would come near death; break his soul down to shreds and piece him back together, and continue this process until Winston didn't know what was real. It's surprising how they took such drastic measures to convert people to love Big Brother, only to kill them afterwards. It seems like a waste, but to them I guess it's not - they do it simply because they can. It's a horrible, dark way to feel knowing that something like this could happen in the future. That was Orwell's main message. |
