dear parent,
for the next two weeks, students will be engaged in a problem-based unit
researching ways to develop a day of healthy eating at a local sleep-away camp,
together-wood camp. the students are excited about this project because summer
is fast approaching and many know they will be attending camp soon. problem-based
learning begins with a real life problem that is meaningful to students. the
students will be working cooperatively in groups to develop their healthy menu. students will begin by identifying the problem in relationship to planning a menu for the summer camp. they will need to develop a menu that is healthy, appealing to the campers, and stays within a budget. with their group, they will organize, classify, and display their findings either on a poster or on kidpix. at the end of the unit, the students will each have to write a letter to the camp director explaining why they chose the menu and the group will present their menu to the camp director. in addition, the students will be completing a web quest. a web quest is a online project that allows the student to research a topic that interests them. we will be completing a food group web quest. the link to this web quest is found on this site.
you can help! please save your grocery ads and send them into school on
monday. they students will be looking through them to determine how much money
they should spend on each meal. you
can also help by allowing your child to help pack their daily snack and lunch.
please take this opportunity to discuss healthy food choices with them!
we are very excited about this unit. please check out our web-page in a
few weeks to see our final projects!
sincerely,
mrs.
