Lake Pontchartrain
There is truly something for everyone along the lake. If you are interested in the botanical world you can see many of the same plants you would see at any major botanical garden in the south. There are oak trees, pine trees, palm trees, weeping willows, crepe myrtles  and rain trees. There is an occasional hibiscus in bloom if you make the trip at the right time of the year and there are wild flowers scattered around through the park. The lush Saint Augustine sod lines the park and provides you with one of three options for your journey. You can travel the gravel, levee top surface with a view of  both the lake and homes along the park. You can travel the asphalt trail; or you can take to the sod.
On a damp day the sod is soft earth that you can trudge through. The soft sod cakes your shoes making you feel one with the earth. Walk back up on the levee and the gravel erodes off the dirt and you have clean walking shoes once again.
If you aren't very interested in botany but have an artistic and contemplative side you may find many reasons to enjoy this walk also. There is an interesting juxtaposition between the forces of man at work in the ongoing revitalization of the park and the forces of nature as reflected by the Lake in its sometimes calm demeanor and sometimes rough wash over the rocks and crags of the shore. It might be a good time to meditatively contemplate the awe filled world of nature while still being amazed at the acclomplishments of man. One such accomplishmenis  the 26 mile long span of bridge which now crosses the lake.

Along with the Causewy bridge, some of the most notable sights along the path are the Purple Martin Sanctuary, the seafood establishments out at bucktown, the Cenacle retreat house and the famous New Orleans home of Al Copeland who revolutionized the culinary industry by creating his own niche in the market. Now he is famous for New Orleans style restaurants comparable to Bennigan's or Houston's.
Lake Pontchartrain provides boating and fishing and an inspirational shore line.
The best way to experience Lake Pontchartrain is to walk it's shores. This walk can:
*Revive your spirit
*Bring you a greater awareness of your surroundings
*Give you a safe form of exercise
Lake Pontchartrain has always provided New Orleans with a place to relax and find recreation. The prospect for this Naturally beatutiful landscape becoming even more significant to the area is improving everyday.
