What are Some Problems and Possible Solutions to Solar Energy?
Problem: The primary reason that solar energy with photovoltaics is not a mainstream means of electricity is that the silicon required in the cells makes it too expensive.  The purification process of the silicon is very inefficient and the silicon must be assembled in the cells manually.  In addition to these already expensive processes, photovoltaic cells do not work well when they are overheated, therefore a cooling system is required.
Possible Solution: Research for alternative metals to silicon are underway.  Cadmium sulfide and gallium arsenide are two possible alternatives.

Problem: What happens when there is no sunlight?  This is another major reason why more people don't rely on solar energy to power their homes.
Solution: There are two solutions you can adopt to solve this problem.
1.  You can attach batteries to your solar panel in case the sun is not providing enough energy for your needs.
2.  You can attach your solar energy panels to the utility grid, which is the mainstream power source.  When you make more energy than you need, you can sell it back to the utility grid.  When you aren't making enough electricity for your home, you can buy some from the power grid.  The amount of electricity you buy from the grid will likely be offsetted by the excess electricity you sell.  Now you have free electricity rain or shine, day or night.
