Guided Reading———————————————————————————
Reading Groups Overview
I see reading groups about 3 times a week. They take an hour to see (15 minutes for each group) and while I'm seeing them the other students are at workstations or working at their desks. I had to start using a timer because I would loss track of time and end up not seeing every group. Our school has a wonderful leveled library where I check out sets of books to use for groups.

My guided reading table. When I first started working at this school I didn't have a table so I had to meet with my reading groups on the floor for six months. This table is the only piece of furniture I label with my name over the summer! I guard it with my life!

  Guided Reading Lessons
There is a lot of literature about how to structure a guided reading lesson and everyone does it differently. Usually I begin with an introduction to the book before the students read it either alone or together. We then discuss the book and will sometimes do an extension exercise. Depending on the book and level we spend 2 to 3 days on a book.

  Note Taking
I use a spiral notebook divided into a section for each student and a section for when I saw the groups and what we did. In the student section I keep informal running records and observational notes.

This is where I keep all of my guided reading materials.

  Book Boxes
After a student has read a book in their reading group they put it in their book box so they can reread it. I love these boxes! I bought them at Wal-Mart last year. They came in sets of four and cost about $1 a box. They are very sturdy (They are Rubbermaid), hold all sizes of books and are nice and brightly colored.
