Notre Dame de la Garde is a monument devoted to the Virgin Mary who is said to protect the city, specifically the boats and fishermen at sea. It is located very near our apartment and the views are breathtaking since it is at the top of the city overlooking the sea, mountains and town.

Although Marseille has stretched much further in modern times, this port is the birthplace and heart of the city. Founded in 600 B.C. by Greek sailors as a center for trade, Marseille has become one of the world oldest cities.
We live only a few meters from the port and are lucky enough to be able to see it every day on our walk home. It is still remarkable to us even after six months here. I don't think we will ever get used to the fact that we live on the Mediterranean Sea! Here are a bunch of pictures depicting it from all angles. We hope it can give you an idea of how impressive it is.
