Centrally located Kyoto cool spots with loads of ATMOSPHERE and/or VIEWS. To have a coffee and cake in the afternoon or a cocktail and a snack in the evening... Particularly around the Kiyamachi area and the first street south and north of BAL. Kyoto as well as much of Japan is caught up in a revival of "orientalism" ie. anything "Asian" is cool, as well as lapping up and imitating the post-modernist pop interior design of the 50's and 60's.
What all this means, is that a barewalled concrete room reminiscent of a Bauhaus block, might have smooth red curved 1950's lounge sofas or futuristic molded pink chairs, while tropical plants and bamboo decorate the table. Background music may be anything from deep lounge to jazz or japanese flute. You can expect to pay from about 500Yen for a coffee, upto 2500Yen for snacks and several cocktails at the places on this list.

| Windows cover nearly the entire north, east and south walls. Comfortable lounges, cool DJ playing mellow grooves, 20's-30's crowd. You get a totally different perspective on Kyoto from up here. Sunset time is best, weekends can be very crowded. Can also get very smoky. Friendly staff. They serve a suprisingly delicious *homemade* scone and tea set here for 800Yen! |

| Really cute 60's pop decore. You can sit on the matress-like cushions or at the tables. Nice bright atmosphere and during summer the door is opened onto the little balcony overlooking the Kamo river. The cofee was nice, but a little on the small side. Another popular spot among young women.
