The college was founded by the then vice chancellor, Mr. Mohammad Ali (S.PK) of the university of Peshawar in June 1964, and is a living monument of his faith in the emancipation and education of women.

Formerly called university college for women, it is renamed as Jinnah College for Women in 1976 to commemorate the founder of the country Mohammad Ali Jinnah's devotion and his commitment of Islamic College which turned out to be the corner stone for the establishment of the university of Peshawar and the birth of constituent educational institutions, Jinnah College for Women can be considered one of the highly esteemed offspring of the university.

It shares the moto of the university and has firm faith in the words "Lord advance me in knowledge"
