HUAB & BRANDBERG
27 August 2000 - 16 September 2000
Huab River Beds (27 August - 10 September)
Located in the region of Damaraland in the north-west and west of Namibia, are the locations for two ecological survey projects. The aim is to carry out ecological surveys and research, with particular emphasis on the overlap between conservation work and the needs of the local community, for example where there is a huge demand for water by both human and elephant populations. It is proposed that Venturers will assist scientists to conduct surveys of elephant along the river beds, and asses the need for elephant water points at strategic locations. Venturers may also be involved in other data collection work whilst trekking through the area.
Brandberg (10 September - 16 September)
Brandberg Diversity << Learn more about it, including photos from different views of this amazing place
The highest mountain of Namibia. The peak --- Königstein (2573m) This was a tough and physical demanding journey for us. Rugged terrain was the main barrier for us to climb up to the summit.
The Brandberg Massif is a large granite protrusion which rises to 2000 metres above an otherwise flat plain in western central Namibia, forming the nation's highest point. It is a national monument and the area is widely accepted as being of great biological interest as a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. The Brandberg Massif will be the location of a bat and insect project which will also incorporate an element of challenging trekking. Working alongside a scientist from Leeds University, Venturers will learn basic sampling and identification techniques which will allow large amounts of valuable data to be collected and analyzed.
