Halloween History:
Books:
Halloween: An American Holiday, an American History,
by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne, 1990.
An excellent (and
fairly recent) book which goes into every detail of Halloween
customs in the U.S. over the last few hundred years, and how they
blended to develop into modern Halloween. Quotes and Outline.
Halloween Through Twenty Centuries, by Ralph and
Adelin Linton, 1950.
Perhaps the only
reasonable predecessor to the above book - despite some minor
inaccuracies, this book brings a wealth of traditions not found
in other works - such as a detailed outline of the traditional
Scotish poet Robert Burns' poem,
"Halloween". Quotes and Outline.
The Book of Halloween, by Ruth Edna
Kelley, 1919.
The
first book published on Halloween. Covers history and traditions
in both Celtic and Germanic countries. Quotes and Outline.
Halloween and Other Festivals of Death and Life,
edited by Jack Santino, 1994.
For those
looking for more detailed studies and an extensive bibliography,
see this book. Many of the sources are smaller essays printed in
Folklore journals .
An Article by Jack Santino.
Witches, Pumpkins, and Grinning Ghosts: The Story of
the Halloween Symbols, by Edna Barth, illustrated by Ursula
Arndt, 1972.
Look for this book in
the children's section of your library. A comprehensive outline
of the symbols of Halloween, with many evocative
illustrations.
