34:4-28. Moses' Sixth Ascent.

(Introversion [Chiasmo]).
1491 B.C.

34)

1: And the Lord (Yahaveh) said to Moses (Moses must have descended the 5th time, see 19:3), "Hew you two tables of stone like unto the first (Moses makes these second tables; Yahaveh made the first, see 31:18): and I will write (see 17:14) upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke.
2: And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to mount Sinai, and present yourself there to Me in the top of the mount.
3: And no man shall come up with you, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount."
4: And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first;

and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai (Moses 6th and last descent, see 19:3), as the Lord (Yehovah) had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

5: And the Lord (Yahaveh) descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord (Yahaveh). (As promised in 33:19.)
6: And the Lord (Yahaveh) passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Lord, Lord (Yahaveh, Yahaveh) GOD (El), merciful and gracious, longsuffering (=slow to anger), and abundant in goodness (lovingkindness, or grace) and truth (=faithfulness),
7: Keeping mercy (=lovingkindness, or grace) for thousands, forgiving iniquity (=bearing away perverseness) and transgression (=rebellion) and sin, and That will by no means clear the guilty (Not even Christ, when our sins were imputed to Him: therefore, all now in Him are "cleared", Heb. "clearing will not clear", emphasis on "by no means"); visiting the perverseness of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation." (This refrain recurs in whole or in part in Ex.20:5. Cp. also Num.14:18. Deut.5:9. Neh.9:17. Ps. 103:8. Jer.9:24; 30:11; 46:28. Dan.9:4. Nah.1:3. The visiting spread over in mercy, not extended in wrath.)

8: And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. (This is ever the effect of the manifestation of Yehovah in grace. Cp. 2 Sam.7:18.)
9: And he said, "If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord (Yahaveh), let my Lord (Yahaveh), I pray You, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked People (The moment Yahaveh speaks of grace, Moses turns the very charge of Yehovah, in 33:5, into a plea and ground for His presence); and pardon our perverseness and our sin, and take us for Your inheritance."

10: And the Lord (Yahaveh) said, "Behold, I make a covenant (of marvels. This covenant finds its complete fulfilment in the Apocolpse): before all your People I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the People among which you are shall see the work of the Lord (Yahaveh): for it is a terrible (Heb. yare, to fear; mor. to revere) thing that I will do with you.
11: You observe that which I command you this day: behold, I drive out before you the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

12: Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which place you go, lest, they be for a snare in the midst of you:
13: But you all shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars (cp. 23:24; 24:4, and Lev.26:1), and cut down their groves: (Heb. 'shrh. First occ. out of 40: always rendered "groves", but denotes a phallic image, worshipped by libidinous rites and lascivious practices. See notes below.)
14: For you shall worship no other god: for the Lord (Yehovah), Whose name is Jealous, is a jealous GOD (El):
15: Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods , and do offer slain sacrifices to their gods, and one (of them) call you, and you eat of his slain offering;
16: And you take of their daughters unto your sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make your sons go a whoring after their gods.

The shrh.

The word 'Asherah is from the root 'ashar, to be straight, erect, or upright. From this comes the meaning, in amoral sense, to be upright, hence, to prosper or be happy. The 'Asherah was so called because it was something set upright or erect in he ground, and worshipped. The word occurs 40 times, and only a careful study of each passage will give a correct view.
Compared, with this, all that men may think or say about the 'Asherah is of little value. The word is always rendered grove or groves in the A.V.; and always left as a proper name in the R.V.
From the conspectus of the passages, we learn that it was ether a living tree with the top cut off, and the stump or trunk fashioned into a certain shape (Deut.16:21): or it was artifcially fashioned and set erect in the ground (Isa.17:8. 1 Kings 14:15; 16:33). It was made of wood (Judg.6:26) or stone. What the shape was is indicated in 1 Kings 15:13, and 2 Chron.15:16, were the A.V., "an idol in a grove", should be (as in the R.V.) "an abominable image for an Asherah". It should be "cut down" (Ex.34:13, the first occ. of the word); "plucked up" (Mic.5:14); "burnt" (Deut.12:3); or "broken in pieces" (2 Chron.34:4).
It is often coupled with mazzevoth, or stone "pillars" (R.V. and rendered images in the A.V.), connected with Baal-worship.
That it could not be a "grove" is clear from 2 Kngs 17:10, where it is forbidden to set one up "under any green tree".
While it is distinguished from Ashtoreth the goddess, it is yet associated with that goddess, Ashtoreth being representitive of the productive (or passive) principle of life; and Baal being representitive of the generative (or active) principle.
The image which represents the Phoenician Ashtoreth of Paphos, as the sole object of worship in her temple, was an upright block of stone, anointed with oil, and covered with an embroidered cloth.
Such stones are to be met with all over the Semitic world; especially in Babylon, in Syria, Palestine and Arabia. Even the Mahommedan sacred stone (kaaba) at Mecca remains an object of reverence.
The place Beth-el (the house of God) was so called because of its anointed stone (Jacob's pillar). There was another Beth-el in Northern Israel.
Two colums of stone stood before every Phoenician temple. Those at Tyre are described by Herodotus (ii.44); and the "pillars of the sun" are mentioned in 2 Chron.34:4. Isa.17:8, &c.
Like ever form of "religion", it had to do with the "flesh", and hence, by the law of evolution (which is seen oerating only in human affairs) it soon became corrupted. Evolution is seen in the progress of man's work, because he begins from ignorance, and goes on learning by his mistakes and failures (hopefully). From the moment he ends his work devolution at once sets in and deterioration begins. This is especially true in the "religious" sphere. All religions have become corrupt.
So with the Asherah. Originally a tree, symbolical of the "tree of life" (i.e. Christ, see Gen.3:24), it was an object of reverence and veneration. Then came the perversion of the earlier idea which simply honored the origin of life; and it was corrupted and debased into the organ of procreation, which was symbolized by the form and shape given to the 'Asherah. It was the Phallus image of Isa.57:8, and the "image of the male", Ezek.16:17.
These symbols, in turn, became the incentive to all forms of impurity which were part of its libidinous worship, with the swarms of "devotees" involved in its obscene orgies.
The serpent was accepted as the symbol of then nexus, and was thus associated with the "pillar" and the "tree". Hence, it too became an object of worship.
The principal factor in this form of Canaanite idolatry is that it was not a primitive concepton of a religious rite, but the corruption of an earlier idea which began honoring the origin of life.
All the ancient systems of idolatry, connected with Astrology, and Mythology, &c., were, in the same way, not original inventions of what was new; but the corruption of what was old, and the peversion of ancient truth.
There can be no doubt about its being, in essence, Phallic worship pure and simple, whatever may have been its origin. This abomination was common to all the ancient nations; and relics of it are found today in various form, in India and elsewhere. Ever hear of "Easter"? I'll bet you'll never guess where that comes from! Shame on you my fellow believers. Christ is our Passover! You better get rid of that "Easter bunny", our Father doesn't like it. A word to the wise is sufficient. This may offend some but I like to teach the truth. The menhirs of the Celtic religion are the true descendants of the 'Asherim.
At first it was centered in the Canaanitish nations; and from them it spread to the others. It was the great abomination of Canaan, and that is one reason why the Canaanites, as the descendants (hybrids) of the Nephilim (fallen angels), had to be destroyed by the sword of Israel. The other reason was the origin of those nations themselves (this is dicussed in the study "Son's of God " & "The Nephilim" by Dr. Bullinger), with which it was closely connected. The first mention of the 'Asherah stamps it as being the special object of Yahaveh's hatred. It is given to explain His name "jealous"; for that is the name He takes in denouncing it. Compare His threats in 1 Kings 14:15; 15:13; 16:32,33; 2 Chron.36:14, &c.
It led to Israel's banishment from the land; and subsequently to that of Judah's.
It is still preserved in veiled language in secret fraternities; Freemasonry, Theosophy, and in the Roman Church; language so conceals it that probably those who use it today have little idea of what they are perpetuating (as stated above, namely "Easter", which is a mistranslation of the Greek word pasha, which should be translated Passover); while the ancient symbols: I O , proclaim "sex as the true God of Hosts", as the Kabbala declares.
A recrudescence (to become raw, or sore again) of this is more than hinted at; and it will be understood when "the abomination" of Antichrist shall stand once again in the Temple at Jerusalem (Matt.24:15).
The following passages will show further the nature of this form of idolatry:-Jer.5:7; 7:30:31; 19:4,5; 37:34-35. Hos.4:12-14. Amos 2:7-9.
The word Asherah is noted in each passage where it occurs in this work, but the following complete list is given to put the student in possession of the whole of the data; and thus to enable him or her to form his or her own conclusions. 32: And afterward all the sons of Israel came near: and he gave them in commandment (charged them all) all that the Lord (Yahaveh) had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
33: And until Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.
34: But when Moses went into the tent before the Lord (Yahaveh) to speak with Him, he took the vail off (and, when Israel thus turns to Yahaveh, He will take the vail from their heart, as Moses did from his face, 2 Cor.3:16. We, now, are "not as Moses", v.13), until he came out. And he came out, and spoke to the sons of Israel that which he was commanded.
35: And the sons of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again (so 2 Cor.3:13. Greek = "Kept putting a vail on his face" [imperfect tense]. They could not see "the end of the Law", which is Christ. Rom.10:4), until he went in to speak with Yahaveh.
