Straight From the Heart

Chapter 10

It seemed like hours before either one of them moved from their position on the bridge. Finally, Brenda sat up with a start. "Oh my God, Jax! I have to go!" she exclaimed and jumped up from his lap.

It broke Jax from his daze, but it confused him. He was still seated on the cold stone and she was standing before him holding her hand out to him and looking panicked. "What?" he nearly panicked himself, not knowing what she was talking about. "You can't go. Not after I just got you back!" He grabbed her hand and she pulled him up from the ground. His eyes were wide with fear that he might actually have to let her go again.

Brenda quickly calmed down and took hold of his hands to reassure him. "No, no, sweetie, I didn't mean I wanted to leave you." She stepped closer and hugged him tightly. "I won't ever leave you again, I promise you that," she whispered into his neck as she felt him relax and breathe a sigh of relief. She pulled back from him again. "I just meant that there is someone who is probably frantically searching for me now. I've been gone so much longer than I ever thought I would be. I just never could have predicted this is what was going to happen."

Jax eyes grew panicked again as the first thought that came to his mind was that this person who was looking for her must be her boyfriend.

Brenda saw his reaction and took his hands again. "It's just a friend of mine, Jax. Don't worry. She came up with me to try and find you. She's waiting at her sister's house. At least, I hope she's still waiting there and she hasn't called the missing people's line."

Jax visibly relaxed again when he heard her say that this friend was a woman. He was just so confused right now and he didn't want anything to ruin this potentially perfect situation.

Brenda broke into his thoughts once more. "Jax? We do have to go now. They are probably really worried about me."

He shook his head to try and clear it, but he realized he was in more of a daze than he could shake himself out of. But he forced himself to nod his head and follow her in the direction of her friend's house. Thoughts were racing through his head, not one of which he thought he could explain out loud if anyone had asked him to. He continually glanced over at her while they walked. He entwined his fingers with hers and held on tightly, mainly to assure himself that she wasn't going anywhere.

Before long, they reached her friend's house. He was surprised to recognize the SUV in the driveway as his brother's. What was Jerry doing there? Surely they didn't know Brenda was with Jax already? Brenda led him to the front door and rang the doorbell. The door swung open almost immediately and a woman with long, blonde hair stood behind it. She gave a little shriek when she saw Brenda and quickly went over to hug her.

"Caitlin! Oh my God, where were you? We've been worried sick about you!" she exclaimed, ignoring Jax momentarily.

Brenda pulled back and tried to laugh. "Jess, it's okay. I'm fine. I'm sorry I worried you, but you will never believe what happened!"

Jax stood by in the shadows, watching silently. Obviously, this was the woman that had come to help Brenda find him. Caitlin? Who was that? Was that who Brenda thought she was? He put a hand to his head and tried to breathe deeply. There was so much to explain now, not the least of which was why Jerry was there. He was brought back to reality when Brenda grabbed his hand and brought him into the doorway.

"Jax, this is Jessica Cross. Jess, this is Jax!" Brenda introduced them.

Apparently, she had told Jess briefly what had happened while Jax was lost in thought. He was vaguely aware of someone shaking his hand and he thought he said something like 'nice to meet you,' but he wasn't sure. Then, he was being pulled into the house and dragged into the living room where he was shocked to actually find Jerry sitting there with his arm around his girlfriend, Jen.

"Jax?" Jerry said immediately. Then, he took note of who was next to Jax. "Brenda?!" he exclaimed and jumped up out of his seat. He practically ran to her and hugged her tightly. This was unbelievable. When Jen had called him four hours ago to tell him what had happened, he'd come over immediately. He thought the story was too farfetched, but he stuck around to make sure, just in case it turned out to be Brenda. He let go of Brenda and studied Jax intently. His little brother looked like he was in a walking coma. He realized Brenda had control of the situation as he watched her lead Jax to the couch and make him sit down.

As soon as they were all seated again, Brenda told them the whole story. She told them everything she did that day after she'd left the house, from wandering the town, to the tree grove she'd sat in for hours, to finally finding Jax on the bridge. The whole time, Jax hadn't said one word, but instead sat close to Brenda, holding her hand tightly in his. The expression on his face was unreadable and unmistakably confused. Jerry could tell he was close to thinking all of this was one big dream that he never wanted to wake up from. He realized that Jax was probably not going to remember any of this in the morning, he was that out of it. The only tangible thing to him right now was the hand that he held tightly to, making sure it never left his.

Sometime later, Jax was surprised to find that he was led to Jerry's Explorer and ushered into it. Jerry drove while Brenda continued to sit next to Jax, all the while holding his hand. Jerry let them into the building and led the way up to Jax's penthouse apartment, since Jax was in no shape to do it. He opened the door to the apartment with his key and directed Brenda toward Jax's bedroom. If she was disturbed that he no longer lived in the Port Charles Hotel, she didn't let it show so that Jerry could see it. Still leading Jax, she followed Jerry's directions to the bedroom and stopped Jax next to the bed. She was almost afraid of the state he was in, that he was so out of it. He didn't seem to notice anything, he only held onto her hand tightly and constantly looked at her and into her eyes. He wouldn't even let go of her hand long enough for her to unbutton his shirt, so she had to do it one-handed. She pried her hand from his to get the shirt off, but he took it back so quickly she wasn't even sure she'd let go. The same thing was done for his jeans and eventually, Jax wore only his dark blue silk boxers. Brenda pushed him to lie down on the bed and she kneeled next to him when he wouldn't let go of her hand still. However, it was only moments later when he relaxed his grip and she could tell he was fast asleep. She gently let go of his hand, very careful not to disturb him and went back into the living room.

Jerry was seated on one of the couches, waiting for her, as she knew he would be. He got up as soon as he saw her and pulled her into another bear hug. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you, Brenda," he whispered.

She grinned, "Not nearly as happy as I am to see you. Thank you for your help in getting Jax back here." AS if she even had to say it. She pulled away.

"Is he okay?" Jerry asked, concerned. "He was so out of it."

"I know, but I think that's probably normal. I'd probably react the same way, but the situation was so different for me. He's just had such a shock to his system tonight. I'm sure he'll be fine in the morning."

"Take care of him, all right?" Jerry said as he opened the door to leave.

Brenda hugged him once more. "I will. Good night, Jerry." She watched until he was on the elevator and then closed and locked the front door. She returned to the bedroom to find Jax moving somewhat restlessly in the bed. He shook his head from side to side and a soft moan came from him. Brenda quickly got undressed and found one of his pajama tops to sleep in. She slid into the bed next to him and immediately took him into her arms. Suddenly, he was quiet again and sleeping peacefully. She smiled as she realized her presence had calmed him so. She relaxed against him and was soon asleep, as well.

Jax awoke with a start the early next morning. The sun was barely starting to rise on the summer day. He moved his hand on the bed next to him and it confirmed what he thought. It hadn't been real, she hadn't been real. He had been afraid it was a dream, but it had seemed so real, like he lived it. He felt awful knowing he had just been dreaming. He had actually been counting on waking up and finding that she was still there and she was truly alive, but the empty bed next to him proved him wrong.

He turned over on his stomach and faced the emptiness sadly. He closed his eyes as he imagined something that couldn't have been there. Her scent was on the pillow and the sheets, but he knew he was only imagining it, wanting to remember it from three years ago. She'd never slept in this bed, it couldn't have been her. He grabbed the pillow from the other side and hugged it to him. A tear threatened to escape the corner of his eyes as he lay there. He remembered the dream he'd had, and suddenly, he gave into one of his rare moments of true emotional weakness. The pillow he held was soon soaked with his tears as he cried, remembering how real she'd felt in his arms. He'd felt hope and he felt her love again for the first time in three years. It was so unfair for something to be that real and have it taken away from him. The disappointment was coming directly from his soul.

Brenda had woken very early, having hardly slept at all, and was in the bathroom, toweling her hair dry, when she heard the gut-wrenching sobs coming from the bedroom. She immediately dropped the towel and ran to the bedside. What she witnessed actually frightened her. She'd never seen Jax so heartbroken in her life. He was lying on his side, clutching her pillow, and crying uncontrollably. She was about to reach out and get his attention when he moved suddenly. Before she could blink, he ran for the bathroom where his stomach convulsed violently. Brenda followed slowly behind him, more confused than ever. He had cried so hard he'd made himself sick, and she didn't understand it at all. She knelt next to him on the floor in front of the toilet where he had his head buried in his forearms. His shoulders still shook with sobs. She placed one hand cautiously on his shoulder, but he didn't even acknowledge it was there.

"Jax? Jax?" she said softly. "What's wrong, Jax?" She gently shook his shoulder to get his attention.

Finally, Jax's head jerked up as he came around and felt something touching him. He looked to see what it was because there was no way it was what he thought it was. There was no way she was there. When he did see her kneeling next to him on the cool tile floor, he recoiled in shock. Great, now I'm hallucinating, too. He scooted back into the corner of the bathroom and leaned against the wall. He watched with fear as this vision of his moved toward him.

Then, she spoke again, "Jax, what is wrong? What is going on?" She was terrified something was truly wrong with him. First, he'd been crying so hard he made himself sick and now, he wouldn't come near her. He actually looked like he was afraid of her.

He slowly shook his head as she approached. "No," he whispered. "No, no, no, you're not real, you're not real," he repeated over and over again. He covered his eyes and then leaned forward and put his head to his knees, still breathing hard.

Brenda finally began to understand. He didn't believe what he was seeing, that she was alive and with him. He either didn't remember last night happening, or he thought it had been dream, which would explain his reaction upon waking up. She put her hand on his knee and then reached for his hands covering his eyes. She took hold of one of his hands and gripped it tightly.

"Jax, look at me. Look at me, Jax," she pleaded. "It's me. It really is me. I'm here. Jax, please, you're scaring me." She thought about how ridiculous those words sounded when she realized that was exactly what she was doing to him. He was terrified right now. He obviously didn't think it was possible for her to be there, so he must have thought he was hallucinating.

Jax began to take slow, deep breaths and try to calm himself down. What is wrong with me? Why is this happening now? As he calmed down, he became aware of someone touching his knee and someone was saying something to him. He wasn't quite sure he wanted to see who it was, he was afraid of what he would see. Instead, he began to concentrate on the words the person was whispering. Slowly, he came to understand the pleas of the other person. As soon as he heard the words, he tried to figure out if he knew the voice. Oh, my God, he suddenly realized, it's Brenda's voice. It can't be, I can't be hearing her voice. He felt the person take his hand from his eyes, but he refused to look up. He couldn't handle this. He heard the person begging him to look at her, to see her, but he couldn't. He was too afraid.

She had seen him start to calm down, but now Brenda saw him begin to shake his head and heard him whispering to himself, or to her, she wasn't quite sure. She listened intently to hear what he was saying. "I can't…I can't do it…what if it's not real…I can't…" He said the same words again and again. She understood now that he wouldn't look at her because he was afraid that she would only be a vision and that she might disappear again. Nothing she was doing was getting through to him, he was too afraid of her.

Suddenly, she thought of something she could do. She left Jax curled up in the bathroom and ran to get the phone. It was barely six-thirty in the morning when, as quickly as she possibly could, she dialed Jerry's old phone number, instantly thankful he hadn't changed it in three years. He picked up on the third ring, his voice still filled with sleep.

"This better be good," he said gruffly.

"Jerry, I need you," she said in a rush. "I know it's early, but I need you. I don't know what to do."

"Brenda?" he tried to get her to tell him. "Brenda? Is that you? Slow down, tell me what's wrong." He sat up quickly as he realized it was her and she was in a panic over something. Jax, he thought and flew out of bed, still holding the phone.

"It's Jax, Jerry. I need you. I don't know what to do." She sounded on the verge of tears now.

"Brenda, calm down, all right? Just calm down. I'm on my way right now. Whatever it is, just stay with him." Jerry hung up the phone before she could respond and seconds later, he was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, on his way out the door.

Brenda dropped the phone and ran back to the bathroom. Jax hadn't moved. She'd been gone for less than three minutes. He was still whispering to himself, but now he was slowly rocking back and forth.

Jax was trying to slow his train of thought. He was so confused right now. He didn't know what to believe. His senses told him that Brenda was, indeed, right there with him. He could feel her touching him, he could hear her talking to him. But his head and his heart told him she couldn't be there. Brenda was dead. Whatever he was hearing and seeing and feeling wasn't real, it was only a hallucination. He was terrified to put his faith in believing she was there only to find out he was wrong, and she wasn't. But there was the nagging doubt in his mind that asked, what if she was there? What if she was really alive? He thought his head would explode from all the thoughts racing through his mind. He tried to relax and slow down, but now his head was throbbing with pain and the constant stress was making him nauseous again.

Brenda tried again to touch him and take his hand, but this time he wouldn't let her. He recoiled violently from her touch and turned away. It had seemed like an eternity since she had called Jerry, when in reality, it had only been minutes. But finally, she heard the front door close and Jerry's shout to her.

"Brenda, where are you?" he shouted as soon as he was in the door.

She got up quickly to run to him, leaving Jax again on the floor. Jax didn't even hear Jerry coming in. He didn't move from his position at all.

Jerry was walking up the steps toward the bedroom when Brenda came flying at him. He caught her around the waist and held her to him. "Whoa! Slow down, Brenda!" He pulled back and looked at her. She was panic-stricken and her eyes were wild. "What's wrong, Brenda? What's wrong with Jax?" She was scaring him a little now, since he had no idea what could be so wrong.

"I don't know what's wrong, Jerry. He just won't let me near him. He's afraid of me. I don't know what's wrong, he won't talk to me." Her words were rushed and almost incoherent.

Jerry led her into the bedroom where he noticed the bathroom light was on. He also noticed Jax was not in the bedroom with them when they entered it. He sat Brenda on the edge of the bed and kneeled before her. "Is Jax in the bathroom?" She nodded. "All right, now, start at the beginning and tell me what happened."

Brenda ran a quick hand through her hair and took a deep breath. "I'm not sure exactly what happened, Jerry. I was in the bathroom when I heard this awful noise and I went to see what it was. I found Jax here, in the bed, clutching my pillow and crying so hard. They were gut-wrenching - heart-wrenching - sobs and he was so upset, but I didn't know why. Then, all of sudden, he ran into the bathroom and he…" she hesitated for a moment.

"He what, Brenda?" Jerry prompted.

"He made himself so sick," she continued. "I went in to see if he was okay, and I kneeled next to him. He was still crying and he was scaring me. I put my hand on his shoulder and asked him what was wrong. I think as soon as he felt my hand, he looked up and then he jumped away from me, like he had been shocked. He backed against the wall and into the corner. I followed him and tried to get him to look at me. He started to whisper 'no, you're not real' and I figured he thought he was hallucinating and imagining me being there. I tried to tell him I was real, but he didn't respond. Finally, he started to shake his head and he said 'I can't, what if it's not real…' and I think he was trying to explain why he wouldn't look at me. I think he's afraid that I'm not real and that I'm not here with him." She wiped at the edges of her eyes and wiped away the tears that had begun to gather there. "Jerry, I don't know what to do."

Jerry had listened to what Brenda told him seriously. He knew she was probably right about all of this. He knew Jax and in the state he could get in, no one, but him could talk him out of it. He was the only person Jax would listen to in a time like this. He'd had the experience twice before in the last three years, and afterwards, Jax always refused to talk about them. But they were almost exactly like this one. However, before, Jax's vision had always turned out to be false and imagined. Jerry had to convince him that this time it was real.

He told Brenda to stay where she was in the bedroom and he got up to go into the bathroom and closed the door. The condition he found Jax in worried him because it was unlike anything he had seen before. Usually, Jax was sitting against the wall with his head up, staring straight ahead of him. He had always figured out the vision wasn't real before Jerry got there and his seated position was his way of trying to get it back and see the vision again. This time, Jerry got to see what had gone on before he got there.

Jax was curled up in a ball on the floor, with his head against his knees. He had wrapped his arms around his legs and he was slowly rocking back and forth still. He was mumbling something incoherent that Jerry couldn't hear. He sat down next to his brother and put his arm around his shoulders. Jax almost immediately stopped rocking and became still.

"Jax, it's me, Jerry. Come on, talk to me. Tell me what's happening," Jerry began to quietly urge. He didn't want to come right out and tell Jax he knew what was going on and that Brenda was, in fact, outside the door.

Jax started to take deep breaths again and tried to calm the nausea he had been feeling. He still had the pounding headache, but he was starting to calm down, finally. He slowly became aware of Jerry's strong arm around his shoulders and his fear of the visions he'd been having began to lessen. He started to think rationally again. If Jerry was here, then he would tell him. He could straighten it out for him. Was she real? Was his heart right or were his senses right? Was he going to be completely heartbroken again? He lifted his head from his knees and leaned back against the wall and Jerry's arm.

Jerry finally heard him say, "I don't know what's happening, Jerry. I don't know." It was so soft that Jerry had to strain to hear him the first time.

"It's okay, Jax. It's all right. Just try and tell me what happened." He moved his hand to Jax's neck and began to try and massage some of the tension out of them. He felt immediately how scared Jax had been from the knots in his neck.

It was a long time before Jax answered. "I had the most amazing dream last night, Jerry," he whispered, almost in a fantasy state. "It was so real and I didn't want to wake up from it. It's so unfair to have to wake up from a dream like that and have to face reality, you know. I dreamt that I found Brenda, or that she found me rather, and she came home with me. I was on this bridge, you know, the one in the park, and I was remembering her, us, and all of a sudden, she was there. She came to me on that bridge and I was so relieved. Then, the strangest thing happened because she took me over to your girlfriend's house and you were both there, you and Jen, and even Jen's sister, Jessica, I think was her name. I don't know what happened while we were there, I couldn't hear the words in my dream, but somehow we ended up back here. She took me to the bedroom and made me go to sleep. And then, when I woke up, she was gone, and the dream was over. Why, Jerry? Why did I have to go to sleep and lose her?" The words had come out interspersed with breaks and silences and he finished with tears rolling down his face.

Jerry didn't want to tell him just yet that it hadn't just been a dream. It had been a dream come true, in fact. "And what happened when you woke up, Jax?" he prompted again.

"I woke up early this morning, I mean, the sun wasn't even up yet. And I turned over and I swear, Jerry, I could smell her as if she had slept in the bed next to me last night. But that's impossible because she's not here, she's dead. Isn't she?" He didn't wait for a response before continuing. "It's so unfair to wake up to that. It makes it so much worse to have a dream that real and then wake and almost think it was true. I don't know what I did next. I think I held the pillow that smelled like her for awhile and then somehow, I ended up in here and I felt so sick all of a sudden." He winced as he thought about it again.

"Do you still feel that way?" Jerry asked him, wondering if he had to worry about Jax making any sudden moves.

Jax closed his eyes again and sighed, nodding silently. He didn't know what he might do right now. Then, he continued with his story. "I was here and all of a sudden she was kneeling next to me. She touched me, Jer, and I felt it. I literally felt her touch me. And she spoke to me, too. I think I'm going out of my mind, Jerry, seriously, I do. I don't know what to think or what to believe. I want to believe that I really felt her and heard her, but I know with my head that it's not her and she's not here. I can't think that she's real because finding out she's not, I just can't take it again. It's always the same. I can't do it again." He sighed again and closed his eyes. He brought his knees back up to his chest and rested his elbows against them, moving his fingers to massage his temples. He was so tired all of a sudden. He just wanted to stop thinking.

This was what Brenda had told him she had heard Jax saying, but she didn't understand it when he said it. Jerry recognized the signs that Jax was shutting down. He got up carefully, trying not to disturb Jax. He turned down the lights in the bathroom when he opened the door and went out to Brenda. She was still sitting on the bed and she was biting her nails nervously.

She hadn't been able to hear a word of what was going on in the bathroom and Jerry had been in there so long, she was getting really worried. She had only gotten up from her spot on the bed long enough to throw on her jeans from the day before and one of Jax's button-down shirts. She was relieved when the door finally opened and Jerry appeared to her. "Is he okay?" she asked immediately.

He went over and sat next to her on the bed. He nodded his head slightly as he answered, "He will be. He's just really confused right now. He doesn't realize that what happened last night really did happen, he thinks it was all a dream. And not seeing you when he woke up reinforced to him that it was what he thought. Then, he thought he smelled your scent in the bed and it all compounded from there. Seeing you in the bathroom with him was the last straw. He thinks he was hallucinating, like you said."

"But he's okay?"

"He's just too afraid to believe that you're real."

"Has this happened before to him?" Brenda asked as she realized Jerry was speaking with a strong authority on the situation.

Jerry nodded again. "Yes, it's happened twice before. Once right after you disappeared and once about a year and a half ago, but I always got here after he knew it wasn't real. This time he's too afraid to figure out what to believe. He knows he felt you touch him and heard your voice, but he also knows in his heart that you're supposed to be dead, something he had to accept three years ago. The reason it's so different this time is that his senses are conflicting with his conscience."

Brenda sat in silence thinking for a moment. "So what are we supposed to do?"

"I'm not sure. Somehow I've got to convince him that you're here and not just a figment of his imagination."

"You don't think that just telling him is going to do it? If you tell him I'm real, he'll have to listen, won't he? You wouldn't be hallucinating, too, right?"

"I think so, but there's no way to be sure. See, Brenda, right now, he's shut down. He's stopped thinking. He spent so much time trying to figure out what was happening that he wore himself out. I'm going to have to make sure he hears me or it's not going to work." Jerry ran a hand through his hair and looked around briefly. The sun had come up and the morning was wearing on. He remembered then that it was Monday and he asked Brenda to do something for him. "Brenda, do me a favor, please? Call our answering service at the office and let Addie know that we won't be in today due to a family emergency."

"Won't she recognize my voice? Or want to know what the emergency is?"

"No, the machine distorts the voices a little bit, there's a glitch in it. She can't even tell if it's me or Jax calling sometimes until she hears the message we leave. And she knows better than to ask questions when we both call in with an emergency. We only tell her so that she'll know that we don't want any of the calls directed our way, under any circumstances."

Brenda nodded, "Okay, I'll call. Jerry, you don't think it would do any good for me to try and help you convince him I'm here?" She thought it might make it more tangible for Jax.

Jerry shook his head. "No, right now, you're what's confusing him. I know you want to help him, but trust me, you are just by staying out here and worrying about him, which I know you are. But try not, he'll be okay. He just needs a little sense talked into him." He smiled slightly to try and lighten the mood a little. Then, he got up and went back into the darkened bathroom.

Jax was still seated in the same place when Jerry returned to his side. "Jax?" he asked as he sat down again.

"I'm all right, Jer," he responded. He started to get up off the floor, finally. "I just need to go back to sleep and I'll be fine. Just let me go back to bed."

Jerry stopped him by putting a hand on his arm. "Wait a second, Jax. I need to tell you something. And I need you to really listen to me. Okay?" He waited to get a response from Jax to show that he was listening.

Jax sat back down and after a few long moments, he nodded.

"Jax, I know you think this morning has been a little insane and that you might be losing it. But I need you to know that you're not. You are not going out of your mind. You're just confused about what happened and you have every right to be. God knows I am." He took a deep breath before continuing. "Now I need you to listen carefully here, Jax. You are not crazy or insane or losing your mind. Last night really did happen, I swear it. It was not a dream, like you think it was. Brenda is alive and she is here. She has been here all morning. That vision you thought was a hallucination was not. She was really here beside you. She's the one who called me and that's why I'm here. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Sometime during his speech, Jax had retreated again. He had curled back up into a ball on the floor and wrapped his arms around his legs again. Jerry had noticed it when he had said that Brenda was alive, but he knew that Jax was only thinking about what he'd said. He knew it would only be a matter of minutes before Jax realized he was telling the truth. He waited those long minutes, not even noticing that he was holding his breath.

Finally, Jax responded. He lifted his head and gazed in amazement at Jerry. He loosened his grip on his legs and rested his arms folded across the tops of his knees. He started to say something, but then decided not to. Jerry could see the life returning to his eyes and his body. Slowly, Jax began to get up off the floor again. With Jerry's help, he stood and walked over to the sink to splash some cold water on his face. He took a deep breath and opened the door to the bathroom. As soon as he walked into the bedroom, he knew what he was seeing was real. There she was, sitting on the edge of the bed, biting her nails, and wearing one of his favorite shirts. Seeing her in his shirt clinched it for him since there was no way he would have envisioned her wearing it.

He took two steps into the room and as he lifted one arm out to touch her, he whispered softly, "Brenda."

It was all she needed to hear and she was in his arms, hugging him tightly. She felt him literally collapse against her as he held her in his arms. After a long time, she gently led him over to the bed. She forced him to lie down and he took her with him. He wouldn't let her leave his arms, not this time, not ever.

Jerry watched from the doorway where he had moved after exiting the bathroom. When he saw that Brenda had the situation under control, he caught her eye, smiled at her, and left the room. He wasn't leaving, but he knew that Jax didn't need him anymore.

Within minutes, Jax was asleep again, but this time Brenda knew better than to leave him alone. She was going to stay and watch him sleep, right beside him, until he woke up. She didn't care how long it took, she was not going to let him wake up and go through that again. She wanted to be the last thing he saw when he went to sleep and the first thing he saw when he woke up. And she was going make sure that was how it was every day for the rest of their lives.
