John enlisted into Confederate Army in Lenoir County on May 15, 1862 at age 30. He was in the 66th Regiment, Company C, in the NC infantry department.

"John W. - appointed major t rank from 5/16/61 but never served in 2nd reg."

1850 Census lists John and Demaris Hill Cunningham.
