JOHNSTON/DOBBS/LENOIR COUNTIES GRANTOR INDEX - BOOK 26 - LENOIR COUNTY - January 1822 to October 1828

*************************************************************************************************

From "Evan Evans Family History: A Lenoir County Pioneer", Compiled and Published by Joseph D. and Sylvia O. Evans.

Evan's farm was in the Sand Hill District, situated on the south side of the Neuse River and east of Kinston. It was at least 250 acres. In the 1860s there were two bridges below Kinston on the Neuse River. Daugherty's Bridge was just a short distance from the mouth of Stonington's Creek. The other bridge was Pugh's Bridge located just east of the mouth of Contentnea Creek. Evan's farm started about 990 feet up river from Daugherty's Bridge according to the John Rheem deed.

Daugherty's Bridge was earlier listed as Lofton's Ferry on a map dated 1808. Leonard Loftin had a land grant inthe 1700s. Evan purchased at least part of his land from Willis Daugherty. It is listed in the Dobbs County Grantee index as Book 30 page 417. This raises a number of questions. Did Evan buy the whoe 250 acres from Willis Daugherty or was part of it inherited? This entry was made between 1843 and 1846 according to the record in the Archives and History Search Room, Raleigh. Evan had several listings in the Grantor index of the Dobbs County register. The earliest one was 1833 to 1838.

After the Civil War, Evan had his 250 acres sold by the Sheriff on orders of the court for a debt of $170.53. the suit was brought by William B. Becton, attorney for Perry Cox. The abolitionist Sheriff Enoch Cox was installed by the Union army to replace the legally elected Sheriff Fields of Lenoir County. The 250 acres were sold to John Rhem for $185. This deed was recorded in 1868 and re-entered in 1882.

Evan could have gotten part of this land back by the Homestead Act. There is an entry on the dobbs County Grantor Index for Evan Evans for Homestead book 38 page 387. There are 7 entries after he lost his 250 acres. Most were to W. C. Fields (probably deeds of trust for operating money for the farm), and one entry to John H. Avery (probably for land as it was by both Evan and his wife).
