Believe
The day god closed her eyes
my mother says
she felt
twenty angels
that came through the window and helped him to fly
my sisters wept and I stepped
further from faith
the most beautiful sky turned to grey
but hey - the memories seem real
its been years since Ive prayed
still insisting
that I dont want to feel
like you feel

I set it all on fire
and watched the walls collapse
I stand alone and tired
now I want it back
and even if everyone is a liar
I dont want to be
within this silent choir
I want to believe
in something
I want to believe in something

When I close my eyes
will they come for me
will you not believe that I
Ive learned how to fly
will I still be singing
somewhere in heaven
I wonder if angels can cry
I hope they come for me
I hope I see something
I hope that I
walk into the white light
walk into the white light

I set it all on fire
and watched the walls collapse
I stand alone and tired
now I want it back
even if everyone is a liar
I dont want to be
within this silent choir
I want to believe

In something
in something

I want to believe
to believe in something
I said I

I set it all on fire
and watched the walls collapse
I stand alone and tired
now I want it back
and even if everyone is a liar
I dont want to be
within this silent choir
I want to believe
I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
but god closed her eyes
I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
but god closed her eyes

I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
I want to believe in something
but god closed her eyes
we all want to believe in something
I want to believe
in something

Normal Life
I stood under ohio's skies
I could see the open fields for miles
I thought "what the hell am I doing back here again?"
but now I'm trying to reassemble the things I kept and
the pictures fade but I hope to resurrect
the things that kept me sane back then

in the backyard playing on the swingset
dark green shoes off you can get your feet wet
mom and dad sat quiet in the sunroom
sundown, big moon, big sky.

now I just want to live a normal life
get a fast car and a pretty wife
we could have children of our own
settle down here until they're grown
we could buy a house out on the beach
and just die there, out of reach
do you want to live
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life with me

live
a normal life with me

for years I cursed these dead end streets
no where to go, no one to meet
we only talked about the crazy woman down the road
but everything makes much more sense now
someday I'll have my own house
I'll make enough to make it easier to pay the phone bill

in the backyard playing on the swingset
dark green shoes off you can get your feet wet
my wife and i will sit quiet in the sunroom
sundown, big moon, big sky.

I just want to live a normal life
get a fast car and a pretty wife
we could have children of our own
settle down here until they're grown
we could buy a house out on the beach
and just die there, out of reach
do you want to live
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life

I'll watch the kids until you get home
4:58 and you're on the phone
coming back from work on friday
wide-awake in the american dream
I'll make the bed, you feed the cat
could it really be as simple as that? (yeah)
do you want to live
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life with me

do you want to live a normal life with me

now I just want to live a normal life
get a fast car and a pretty wife
we could have children of our own
settle down here until they're grown

I just want to live a normal life
get a fast car and a pretty wife
we could have children of our own
settle down here until they're grown
we could buy a house out on the beach
and just die there, out of reach
do you want to live
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life
do you want to live
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life
do you want to live
do you want to live a normal life with me?

Girlfriend
Room 421
an airport hotel
I know I should be sleeping
but its too soon to tell
if Ill fly out tomorrow
if Ill see her tomorrow
I hope that I will.
no place like alone
and no sound like my own voice
fading into
this quiet december night
but Im doing alright
I ll make a phone call or two

Could I get some room service please?
send the maid in to see
about a few things I need

"Do you think you could
bring me my girlfriend
and a bottle of wine
bring me a future
just make sure its mine
will you open the window
but leave out the cold
could you make a phone call to Jesus
to clean up my soul"

Miles from my own bed
further from content
I guess I should get used to this
still rain on the runway
but Im doing okay
I ve got cigarettes to kiss

"Could I get some room service please?
I m down on my knees
I m only here for tonight
cause they fucked up my flight
serenading the wall
and I thought I should call
you to ask for it all
for it all
for it all

Remember to

Bring me my girlfriend
and a bottle of wine
bring me a future
make sure its mine
will you open the window
but leave out the cold
could you make a phone call to jesus
to clean up my soul."

Dial seven for a savior
"is this soul keeping please...
could you put me through to jesus
I ll pay your long-distance fees"
he said "hello and god bless you.
theres a bible in the drawer."
I said "thats wonderful sir. but I dont read it anymore"
I dont read it any more...

Bring me my girlfriend
and a bottle of wine
bring me a future
make sure its mine
will you open the window
but leave out the cold
could you make a phone call to jesus
to clean up my soul"
bring me my girlfriend
and a bottle of wine
bring me a future
just make sure its mine
will you open the window
but leave out the cold
could you make a phone call to Jesus
to clean up my soul"
yeah
could you bring me my girlfriend
yeah
bring me a smile

Bed of Ashes
Do you hear those distant voices
and sounds through the flames
the deafening drone
of these clanking machines
in the lights
its the same
we're trying to free
the sculpture from the stone
we'll take the rhythm from the throne
if the radio is dying
listen to me won't you listen to me

I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I dont want to burn in a midnight sun
I dont want to know if the system crashes
I dont want to go if its just begun
I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I don't want to burn in the midnight
sun
in the midnight sun

I scream like a madman in the morning
no one heard a thing
I had hoped for a more effective warning
no one felt the sting
someone's savior never saved
take it away 'till there's nothing left to say
the radio is dying
listen to me
won't you listen to me

I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I dont want to burn in a midnight sun
i dont want to know if the system crashes
I dont want to go if its just begun
I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I dont want to burn in the midnight
sun
in the midnight sun

Dancing like a child
will we feel at all
or just smile in another pretty prison
the wires frayed and broken free
it's loud as hell but I don't want to listen
is existentialism so desperate?
condition may seem painful but it won't last
I just march, march
sometimes I get the last laugh

Machines and dreams
to make the choices for you
machines and dreams
I won't go out like that
machines and dreams
to make the choices for your
machines and dreams--
I won't go out

I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I dont want to burn in the midnight sun
I dont want to know if the system crashes
I dont want to go if its just begun
I dont want to lie in a bed of ashes
I dont want to burn in a midnight sun
I dont want to know if the system crashes
I don't want to go i don't want to go
I don't want to lie
I don't want to go
I don't want to lie
I don't want to go

Champagne
I want to dream you
a beautiful dream.
I want to hold you
in the dark
it would seem
that no one sees me like you do
no one moves the way you move
and I can't see anything else
I want to take you now.

Honestly, you're killing me.

And we're drinking
cheap champagne alone in my room
drinking
your name, you wear my favorite perfume
cheap champagne
the flowers in bloom
drinking your name
champagne.

Champagne

If I was stronger
I would take down the moon
we could hang it up
in the corner of your bedroom
and if at night you could not sleep
you could watch it shine
like counting sheep
and only I'll know where the moon has gone.

I want to take you now.

Honestly, your killing me.

We're drinking
cheap champagne alone in my room
drinking
your name, you wear my favorite perfume
cheap champagne
the flowers in bloom
drinking your name
champagne.

Sitting on the floor of a spinning room
the morning sun won't be coming too soon
it's the way you look in that dress
there's nothing I can taste that compares to you
and nothing I can say that's quite as true
as the gift you are. I confess...

That I... I...
I want to dream you
a beautiful dream.
I want to hold you
in the dark
it would seem
that no one sees me like you do
no one moves the way you move
and I can't see anything else

Champagne with you in my room
drinking
your name, you wear my favorite perfume
cheap champagne
the flowers in bloom
drinking your name
champagne.
cheap champagne with you in my room
drinking
your name, you wear my favorite perfume

New Black Car
Waiting tables at your restaurant job
an old man reads the paper in the booth
where I stop
to say hello when Im in town
to ask a friend if youre around.

And I think about those summer nights
we never slept we didn't mind
and I felt so alive and happy
just sitting on the porch
and swinging back and forth
now everything seems so distant

But I promise Im not too far
when youre alone in your brand new car
driving your new black car
into the rain

Are you listening to the radio
are you driving down a city road
are you alone in your new black car
I imagine you there.

Im sitting by the window here
the morning birds will reappear
and I feel empty
our songs are on the radio
you call me up but I have to go
and Im sorry angel.
I m sorry.
but Ill call you right back
I swear.
you think Ive left you there
alone with an empty chair
but I whisper your name

Are you listening to the radio
are you driving down a city road
are you alone in your new black car
I imagine you there.
are you listening to the radio
are you driving down a city road
are you alone in your new black car
the wind in your hair

Are you tired of watching the rain hit the glass
all alone but aware of the places we've passed
together we were singing along to the songs
are you now? are you now?
I'm thinking of you in your college town
are you thinking of me as you're driving around
are you listening to me? are you listening?

Are you listening to the radio
are you driving down a city road
are you alone in your new black car
I imagine you there.
are you listening to the radio
are you driving down a winding road
are you alone in your new black car
the wind in your hair
alone in your new black car
I imagine you there
driving your new black car
the wind in your hair

Are you listening to the radio
are you listening to the radio
are you listening to the radio
are you listening to the radio

Start Again
1,2,1,2,3 Go!
Woo

She said "is anything wrong?"
and I tried to look away
she said I think we should
put it down where secrets lay
I think we finally know
that this won't fill the space
it's over, it's nothing, it's now
the heaviest silence erased, hey hey

If you love me fucking let me go.

I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down
I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down

Come down
woo
come down

She said "I'll take you home"
I packed up my things
I knew I couldn't handle the words
and the deep regret they bring
I think we finally know
that this won't fill the space
it's over it's nothing it's now
it was more than we could face, hey hey.

If you love me fucking let me go.

I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down
I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down

Come down
come
woo
come down

Come down

Start again
start again
start again

Why do I find myself here again you disappeared
with no last words I tried to keep you near.
but like he who stood before the open sea,
you rose your god damn hands and fucking parted me.
but I can start again.
I can try again.
I can always break but I can never bend.
you could lie again
never to find again.
it was your mistake but I will start again

I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down
I will begin to turn it around
try to start again and watch it come down
I... I... I...
will start again

Woo
come down.

Without Wings
I remember when I only cried
when I fell down
everything was either black or white
but it's gray now
Iremember when I learned of love
and the way she sings

like the hurt and the sting
when they're tearing off your wings
and they won't tell you why
but you'll never learn to fly
and if you feel like i do
then you've seen it too

I've seen angels
Iknow time changes almost everything
I've seen angels
without wings

without wings

I remember when the sun fell down
across a perfect sky
we lit the candles but they all burnt out
and it was a long night
I remember when I learned of death
and the weight of time
and the weight of time

I remember when I only cried
when I fell down
every now and then I still feel like
I'm on the cold ground
looking up at all the things I've lost
taking comfort in the things I've found
in the things i've found

like the hurt and the sting
when they're tearing off your wings
and they won't tell you why
but you'll never learn to fly
and if you feel like i do
then you've seen it too

I've seen angels
I know time changes almost everything
I've seen angels
I've seen angels

like the hurt and the sting
when they're tearing off your wings
and they won't tell you why
but you'll never learn to fly
and if you feel like I do
then you've seen it too

I've seen angels
Iknow time changes almost everything
I've seen angels
I've seen angels
without without without without

without without without

without without without

without ... without wings

Meteor Flower
Meteor flower you settled in my life
shine among the cut-out stars and fireflies
singing careful songs across a technicolor night
signals stronger pass between our silver satellites

I think I want to fly away with you
but for now I'm afraid, I'll hold you close it's
all I can do.

Write our names across the galaxy
meteor flower
I'll hold the stars above your life
I'll be your sweet or sour
I could be right there in your perfect stare
I'll be your every hour
write our names across the galaxy
meteor flower

Meteor flower you settled in my night
flashing bright among a field of fireflies
dreaming careful dreams that everyone thought wouldn't last
spinning spider webs around the dying stars we pass

I think I want to fly away with you
but for now i'm afraid, I'll hold you close it's
all I can do.

Write our names across the galaxy
meteor flower
I'll hold the stars above your life
I'll be your sweet or sour
I could be right there in your perfect stare
I'll be your every hour
write our names across the galaxy

In your whisper I get lost
on a stormy sea I'm tossed around 'till nothing else is right
it was a million miles of empty space
before I found a warmer place
orbiting a home up in your sky
up in your sky

Write our names across the galaxy
meteor flower
I'll hold the stars above your life
I'll be your sweet or sour
Icould be right there in your perfect stare
I'll be your every hour
write our names across the galaxy

I could hold the stars above your life
I'll be your sweet or sour
we could write our names across the galaxy.

Write our names across
we could write our names across
we could write our names across the galaxy

And Gomorra
I could feel from miles away
the time you spent and the games you played
in his eyes and his name upon your tongue
but I kept walking

Through the pain and the desert sand
through the night as you took his hand
I found a way to remind you how it was
to remind you how it was

So long ago
so long ago
yeah

Let's walk away from the valley
there's no life in here anymore
let's pack our hopes and our dreams away
and just walk through that door

Now we're marching miles until the sky will rest
until we're free, and we're safe unless
you turn around to see it all fall
no we can't look back

She said "I know"
I know
she said I know
I know
she said I know
she said I know
she said I know
that we can't look back

Now our burning city
lighting up the night
now our burning god
takes away our sight
all those fallen angels
came a little late
our forgotten god
never hesitates
hesitates

Trust in me
trust in me
I will give you life
take my hand
take my hand
I will clean your eyes
trust in me
trust in me
I will give you life
close your eyes
close your eyes
from Gomorra's skies

From Gomorra's skies

She said "I know"
she said I know
she I know that we can't look back.
no we can't look
she said I know
no we
we can't look back

Now our burning city
lighting up the night
now our burning god
takes away our sight
all those fallen angels
came a little late
our forgotten god
never hesitates

Trust in me
trust in me
I will give you life
take my hand
take my hand
I will clean your eyes
trust in me
trust in me
I will give you life
close your eyes
close your eyes
from Gomorra's skies

From Gomorra's skies

Trust in me
trust in me

I will give you life

Anything But Beautiful
Awaken to a world devoid of hope and faith
I don't want to look anymore
I turn it off but it won't go away.
the pain of a high school end
the rest in a young suicide
the media drawing in
an escape from a young girl's life
from a young girl's life.

And we're falling further every day
now our tallest towers sway
Im holding on in this world of decay
and Ive realized that
this is anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful
this is anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful.

Awaken to a day
the fear in the eyes of a boy
the cold of a hospital stay
where a child is a cancers toy
and if the angel for the lord
is the angel with the sword
I dont believe that anymore
I just don't believe that
still holding on for a chance to be strong

Falling further every day
now our tallest towers sway
I m holding on in this world of decay
and Ive realized
this is anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful
this is anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful.

Somebody hold my eyes closed
somebody make the snow and the rain
one step from the fall dont you know
looking for heaven but the light never came
somebody keep my head turned
give me a soul for a piece of the wire
I came for a god but it all burned down
in the fire

Falling further everyday
now our deepest oceans dry
were holding on in this world
of decay
I've realized
open your eyes
this is anything but beautiful
this is anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful
a world anything but beautiful
anything but
anything but
anything but beautiful
anything but
anything but beautiful
anything but
anything but beautiful
anything but beautiful

Washed Away
There was blue green clay
on the banks that day
as we left the world behind
it was upstream then
like it's upstream now
in this livelong outside
there's a trestle across the water
like my hands across that year
for a moment the green was mine

And our footsteps worn
from years of rain
and it held my hand
like it holds my name
and my childhood born
and the difference
the water washed away
the water washed away

I'm bruised and red
from the pain of rock
stepping stones until I fall
and daggers when I land
a roman candle in my hand
was a weapon to the outside
and I walked in my father's wake
I prayed to a god to take
the endlessness of those shores

And our footseps worn
from years of rain
and he held my hand
he still holds my name
and my childhood born
and the difference
We let the water wash away
the water washed away

The water washed away
the water washed away
the water washed away
the water took it all
all away

Those sacred trails
by the waterside left
to other souls(soles) without love or hate
they're bleeding the everything
they're soiling the brilliant green
and I'm drowning for the water's sake

our footsteps worn
from years of rain
and he held my hand
and I still hold his name
and my childhood born
and the difference
I let the water wash away

The water washed away

Let the water wash away
I let the water wash away
The water washed away
Washed it all
The water washed it all away

I let the water wash away
I let the water wash away
The water washed away
away
Water washed it all away
washed it all away
away

The water washed away
the water washed away
the water washed away
take it all away
all away

There was blue green clay
on the banks that day
as we left the world behind

Believe
The day god closed her eyes is the day my dad died.
(i guess i could write about that forever. Just when i think it's the last song...) My mom claims that she felt angels carry his soul through the window. I think that's the greatest story she has told me (although she's FULL of great stories). The first verse is about that, the rest of the song is about faith in general. About me being sick of being an aetheist, being sick of meaninglessness. But the rational part of me refuses to let the rest of me win. My entire life has been a 'faith crisis.'

the "it" in "now i want it back" is faith, to put it simply.  faith in god, life, love, whatever.
even if everyone is a liar, as in, even if everything you hear and think about god isn't true, and life is completely meaningless,
it's still better to believe in something than to be unhappy and quiet (silent choir) without joy.  right?  that's what i'm wondering in the song, anyway.  i chose the metaphor of a silent chior, because i think meaninglessness and non-belief is like silence of the soul.  like a choir, the soul is something that is suppose to be filled with the noise of faith and life.

Anything But Beautiful
Anything Beautiful is simply an observation - the world can be quite a depressing, ugly place. Originally the song had FIVE verses, but because of time, i was forced to cut it down to two, my favorite senarios. The first verse is about a girl committing suicide and the media's relentless attention to tragedy and ugliness (yes i'm guilty too). The second verse was inspired by a benefit show we played for a boy in a hospital bed (quite possibly the most depressing gig ever). The interlude (rap) is about me and my struggle with a belief in god and goodness in all of this shit.

Note:
This song was written well before the events of 9/11

Girlfriend
I was returning from New York City, around Christmas. My girlfriend was in town for the Holidays and I couldn't wait to get back to Cincinnati. Unfortunately, the plane from Newark to Cleveland was delayed because of rain, causing me to miss my connecting flight. The next plane to Dayton or Cincinnati wasn't until the following morning. Stranded in Cleveland and quite pissed off about it, i complained until the airline put me up in a hotel. There, i wrote "Girlfriend," mainly to cheer myself up. No, I didn't actually make any calls to the front desk, and they never put me through to Jesus Christ. But half of the song is true

New Black Car
I'll give you three guesses what this is about. Right! It's about my girlfriend's New Black Car, a VW Jetta. She was so ecstatic about finally buying one, that i felt compelled to include it in a song. Call it a "new direction" for me lyrically, i guess, but i think it worked out pretty well.

Bed Of Ashes
Bed of Ashes is a rant about meaning and music. I salvaged some lyrics from "July" to complete the song. (we're no longer playing July) The "clanking machines" described in verse one represent the depressing, soulless, predictable side of the music industry (and of the world for that matter). While worrying about contracts and money, it's easy to lose sight of the reason we started doing this in the first place- to affect people, to share feelings, thoughts, etc. I suppose the Bed of Ashes represents the loss of that purpose

Champagne
Champagne is a love song. Once upon a time I met this wonderful girl. Over a year later, I bought her this wonderful black dress. and we shared this particularly wonderful evening together drinking cheap champagne. That's when i wrote the song. In my head that night, and the week
after just recalling it. My favorite lines would have to be my fantasy about taking down the moon for her. Because I really would if I could

Washed Away
Washed Away is about the death of my dad. my father died of cancer when i was twelve. he was sick for several years, and just stopped fighting. i don't know exactly why i wrote it now. i am "over" it. as over it as one can be, anyway. i was thinking about it one day, and i just decided not to fight it. sometimes i worry that songs like these that are going to give me that "depressed self-pitying artist" type of image... but whatever. just trust me, i'm not asking for sympathy. the blue green clay can actually be found at Elk Creek, which runs through the other side of town. my dad took me there when i was a kid. i have fond memories of the creek. in the song, the water is a metaphor for ...life. and how it heals with time. washes away, and allows you to get on with things. i have not forgotten, or i wouldn't be writing about it. but i have accepted that it's a large part of who i am, and this song recognizes that.

Meteor Flower
Meteor flower is just a love song. this probably contains some of the more elaborate imagery on
the album. i wanted to write something that was a little abstract, and meteor flower was the result.

And Gomorra
I was dating this very interesting girl. I was in New York for about a week working with Ken on some new material. I had been seeing her for about 6 months or so. About three days into the trip, I received a call from her telling me about her experiences with another guy, one of my best friends, while I had been gone. She had intended to impress me with her honesty. Needless to say, I was not too impressed. It ruined the rest of the trip. Anyway, the verses are mainly references to him, and her, and me. The song is basically a huge extended metaphor, where I represent the "good" guy in the city, she represents his wife (surprise..), and what I had been calling love, represents God. The entire incident involving her and the other guy is the burning cities of Sodom and Gomorra. To make a very very long story less long, she DID look back.

Note:
The vocals for this song were actually recorded in room 421 at the same hotel in Cleveland.

Normal Life
Normal Life is about having someone to love, having a job, the regular things people take for granted, the things that really make you happy.

The [crazy] woman down the street had a pet cemetery, with popsicle-stick crosses. She also had a dog named 'Hey You.'

Without Wings
Without wings was actually inspired by watching my two
youngest sisters growing up. something happens to people
as they enter their teenage years where they realize what
unavoidable injustices permeate our world. it's a gradual,
depressing realization to come to. the metaphorical wings
in the song represent innocence and safety. growing up and
dealing with pain is like losing your wings. the song is about
attempting to retain some of that youthfulness, lightness and
purity as you grow older.
