Okay, the fact that I am in college may put me above random acts of stupidity, but that obviously doesn't apply to everyone. Just take a look at the reproductions of some of many rather laughable things that've been left on the dinner tables and taped to the bathroom stalls since I arrived.

Most MHC Students Party Smart (have 3 or fewer drinks)
10 Tip to Help you Party Smart:
1. A good rule of thumb is not to consume more than 1 alcoholic beverage per hour.
(REMEMBER: A 12 oz Beer= A 4oz Glass of Wine = A 1.5oz shot of hard liquior)
2. Eat plenty of nutrutious foods before and while you drink. High protein and carbohydrate foods
(dips, cheese, meat) will help slow the rate of alcohol absorption
3. Limiting your alcohol intake to two standard drinks per occasion can minimize your risk
4. Remember to plan in advance how you will get home safely
5. Alternate between alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages to slow down your rate of
consumption

6. Avoid playing drinking games, since this can increase your risk for alcohol
7. Use LOTS of ice in your drink. This will help to dillute it and slow down your alcohol intake
8. Avoid accepting a drink you did not pour yourself. This will help you know how much alcohol the
drink contains and reduce the chance of the date rape drug being slipped in
9. Party with people who care about your well being and who respect your choices
AND...
10. Remember to watch for the Prize Patrol and be rewarded for your knowledge!
The majority of students at Mount Holyoke
College drink responsibly when they choose to drink.
Be the majority. Party Smart.

Alcohol Poisoning can occur after drinking too much alcohol and/or too fast. Those drinkers who have little tolerance for alcohol, or whose body is sensitive even to the drug, may become acutely intoxicated and suffer serious consequences after ingesting small amounts of alcohol.
Many Students are surprised to find out that death can occur from alcohol poisoning. Most think the worst that can happen is someone will pass out and have a hangover the next day
***The amount of alcohol that it takes to produce unconsciousness is dangerously close to a fatal dose.
So remember: If you are concerned about someone- Do the Right Thing- Call EMT's/Public Safety x2304 or 1-911

1. Alcohol consumption can cause:
- dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
- inflammation of the stomach lining and intestines
- low blood sugar
- sleep distrubance **
2. Mixing Tylenol (a.k.a Acetaminophen) can cause serious liver damage.
It's a good idea to wait about 12 hours for alcohol to clear your system before taking any medications
3. Practing PREVENTION is your best bet to avoid a hangover
- Remember to stay within the safe drinking limit you set for yourself before you party. ***
- Take in lots of nutritious foods and non-alcoholic beverages while partying. ****

Most MHC Students Don't Experience Hangovers When They Party...
A hangover is characterized by a multitude of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms (which typically last 8 to 24 hours) that occur after time of heavy alcohol drinking. Symptoms include: fatigue, weakness, thirst, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness and sweating, depression, anxiety, and irritability. ******
MYTHS ABOUT HANGOVERS
1. "Mixing your drinks is what causes hangovers..."
The truth is, the major cause of hangovers is drinking more than your safe drink limit.
2. "The best cure for a hangover is..."
The truth is the only cure for a hangover is time. ******* Your body can only metabolize one ounce of alcohol per hour. Cold showers, coffee, exercise or fresh air do not sober a person up. Having a drink the morning after is often thought to cure a hangover, as is drinking lots of water and taking Tylenol before going to bed. However, people experiencing a hangover should avoid further alcohol use or medication, and instead rely on good nutritution and quality sleep to get on their feet.
3. "Its [sic] only beer..." ********
The truth is, the effect may be slower, but you can get just as drunk on beer or wine as you would on "hard liquor". [sic]
* Is this because they're used to drinking massive amounts
of alcohol and they know to prevent it?
** Is that why people who drink a lot feel urpy afterwards?
*** How does 4 beers or 12 shots sound?
**** Like chips and soda
***** There always has to be an ad, doesn't there?
****** Sounds like the side-effect list for most of the medications out there.
******* Ti-i-i-ime, why you punish me?
******** It's only beer, and that is all. Why do I feel the way I do?

*typist's note: I think it would be a lot more effective to say that one of the risks of smoking pot is death. Really. Saying, "You will die" is a lot more effective than saying, "You will do poorly in school." Who cares if it's true?
