13 Going on 30

Starring: Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer
Rated: PG-13

Jennifer Garner stars as Jenna Rink, who makes a wish on her thirteenth birthday and wakes up seventeen years in the future, as a thirty year old. She's now a magazine editor with a grown up boyfriend and has no idea what to do. In an effort to figure out what is going on, she tracks down Matt (Mark Ruffalo), who had been her best friend when they were thirteen.

13 Going on 30 is a nice, fluffy romantic comedy. Similar in plot to movies like Big and Freaky Friday, it has its own special touch. It was mildly painful watching the opening scenes as it was quite obvious there would be some humiliating moment leading up to Jenna's wish. But from the second Jenna woke up in her thirty year old body, I truly enjoyed myself. Jennifer Garner has an amazing range of facial expressions that add to the comedy. She also captured the spirit of a young teenager very well. In the scenes with other young girls, the only difference between them seemed to be her height.

As for the romance part of the comedy, some of the funniest moments came from Jenna's reactions to her very grown up boyfriend. But the sweetest moments were her scenes with Matt, now a photographer. The decisions she doesn't remember making over the past seventeen years have changed their relationship, one she desperately needs in her new foreign world. There actually appears to be chemistry between the two actors, which is a nice change.

Highlights of the movie include the 80s soundtrack, the Thriller dance moves and the fabulous pre-teen fashion from the scenes of thirteen year old Jenna. It's a cute movie that would make an ideal cuddly rental or a cheap movie on date night.

Rating: I walked to and from the washroom at a slightly faster than medium pace.
