The Boeing Chinook tandem-rotor transport helicopter is the RAF's largest helicopter. It carries 45 fully equipped troops or 10 tonnes of cargo, including small vehicles. It can also carry external cargo, such as the FH-70 field howitzer. The Chinook's lift and assault capability has made it a vital part of the UK's operations; landing troops, artillery, light vehicles, supplies and other vital parts of an assault operation. The Chinook was used in Operation Corporate in the Falklands, where the ship Atlantic Conveyor was carrying several Chinooks when it came under attack and was sunk. Fortunately, one survived, and proved immensely useful in the troop/ equipment transport and support role.

The Chinook is an advanced model of the CH-46 Sea Knight, with improved speed, payload and up-rated engines. The Chinook/ Sea Knight is an American helicopter, and was first delivered to the RAF in the 1970's. The Chinook is getting old, and will one day be replaced, but its successor will have a lot to live up to. It has an impressive service record with the RAF, operating in the Gulf & in Kosovo.
