| One of the largest transports ever developed in the UK, the Shorts Belfast was designed to meet an RAF requirement for a strategic transport. The Belfast was based on a previous Shorts design, the Britannic. This was basically a high-winged Bristol Britannia airliner, & the design was later modified further, with a longer fuselage, larger wings & Tyne turboprops. This was renamed the Shorts SC.5, & was selected as the RAF's strategic freighter in January1959. The SC.5 first flew in January 1964, & had multi-wheel landing gear & a ventral ramp/door for loading bulky items such as MBTs & SAMs. Only 10 Belfast C.Mk1s were delivered, which served with No.53 Squadron. The Belfast was retired in the mid-1970s. | ||
