The RAF had severe logistical problems during World War II, mainly because of the lack of many dedicated transport aircraft. Aircraft production was focused on combat aircraft & airborne forces had to use converted obsolete bombers, which were themselves in short supply. After the war, new transport aircraft emerged with longer range & greater capacity, ready to meet the Communist threat. These aircraft were closely related to commercial aircraft. With the development of jet technology, transports gained improved range & speed. These qualities became increasingly important as wars moved further away from home than ever. |
