Shiites look to revenge, reconciliation in Saddam's killing fields.

MAHAWIL, Iraq (AFP) - Three thousand skeletons lie in this one stretch of farmland in southern Iraq (news - web sites), the bones of those massacred by Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime, buried under earthen mounds marked with the remnants of the victims' clothing.

Here, people now speak openly of their memories. Some talk of executing Saddam, others of forgiveness and reconciliation. Saddam, the dictator who towered over their lives, now stands in dock in Baghdad, awaiting his moment of judgement and again alive in people's minds. The fallen dictator, with grey beard and a grey pinstripe suit, was read the preliminary charges against him on Thursday in a heavily-guarded courtroom. Among those charges was the massacre of Shiites in their revolt after the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites). Mohammed Jaber al-Husseini helps his father guard the acres of farm land in this cemetery of "unknown martyrs" where 760 corpse remain unidentified. It lies in Mahawil, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, just one of an estimated 260 mass graves and 300,000 bodies scattered around the country. There are items that help identify the corpses -- identity papers and clothes and worry beads -- but often to no avail. "The unidentified bodies are put in a coffin and buried here," said his cousin Ahmad Hassan al-Husseini, 19. "When someone comes, we ask does he know what the person was wearing when he disappeared," Husseini explains. "Two days ago, a man was identified by his wife and brother. They dug up the bones and took them away," said Ahmad Hassan, Husseini's cousin. "His wife was pregnant when he disappeared and now his daughter is 13-years-old. "The executions lasted throughout the whole month of Ramadan. We heard the shooting three times each day," he recalled. Muthanna Abed Ali, 43, who battled Saddam in 1991 and escaped the graves, said he was happy to know Saddam had been taken before a court. "Since he was the dictator, all decisions came from Saddam Hussein. The others were like machines carrying out his orders," he said. "We believe in revenge. I want him and his family to suffer as we have suffered for 13 years. "I want to see him executed on the same spot where the mothers and widows cried for their sons and husbands. I want this so my mother can take off the black she has worn for 13 years." Ali recalls the arrests and how they began in March 2001 after the Shiites waged their revolt against Saddam's security forces, scoring initial successes before the Iraqi military beat back the resistance, using helicopter gunships to mow them down. "They came to my home and arrested my two brothers," Ali said. Last year, they found their bodies. "We found them in the mass graves of Mahawil," he said. "We recognised the skeletons ... thanks to the medallion attached to the key chain of Mohannad, 20, and the identity card of Bassem, 16," he said. Some hope Saddam's trial will promote reconciliation. "We have had enough blood. We do not want any more of this bloodshed," said Hazem Safi of the association for the defense of human rights in Hilla, capital of Babylon province, south of Baghdad. However, in an indication of the passions and contradictory emotion, Safi said he still wanted Saddam executed.

Shards of twisted metal were scattered by rails in the Atocha station at the spot where an explosion severed a train in two.

"I saw many things explode in the air ... it was horrible," said Juani Fernandez, 50, a civil servant who was on the platform waiting to go to work.

KHALDIYAH, Iraq (AFP) - US troops were hit by a spate of attacks in Iraq (news - web sites), a day after a message attributed to ousted president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) called for continued resistance against the occupiers.

                                            Special Coverage

The attacks came as French President Jacques Chirac called on Washington to transfer power to an Iraqi government within months, after talks firming up French and German positions ahead of a weekend summit with Britain.

Witnesses said US forces took heavy casualties when a vehicle carrying soldiers was attacked before catching fire in Khaldiyah, 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Baghdad.

Witnesses reported seeing between four and eight badly burned US soldiers pulled out of the burning vehicle, and Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television broadcast unconfirmed reports that eight soldiers had died.

"A bomb exploded underneath a troop transport," said resident Mahmud Ali. "It caught fire. The remainder of the convoy tried to continue and was hit by rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) 500 meters (yards) away."

The US military said two US soldiers were wounded in an attack near Ramadi, west of Khaldiyah, but would not confirm the reports of heavy casualties in the same area.

The soldiers, from the 82nd Airborne Division, were wounded in a bomb and small arms attack, an army spokeswoman said, adding that they were in stable condition.

Some 300 Iraqi demonstrators celebrated the Khaldiyah attack, brandishing bits of American vehicles, hoisting portraits of Saddam and pledging to die for the dictator ousted by US-led forces in April.

Others danced joyously around at least two US vehicles swallowed by flames and thick black smoke.

And a fire erupted at an oil pipeline 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of Baghdad, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, the commander of US ground forces said, but it was not known whether it resulted from sabotage.

The latest "Saddam tape" was broadcast by Al-Arabiya on Wednesday. Previous ones have been deemed authentic by US intelligence.

"O mujahedeen, you must tighten the noose and increase your strikes against the enemies by demonstrating, writing on walls and demanding your rights ... and above all through armed struggle," the speaker said, telling the coalition to leave Iraq.

Meanwhile, US officials said they were making changes to Washington's draft UN Security Council resolution seeking international assistance for Iraq to make it more palatable to countries that objected to the original document.

But US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) said there will "probably not" be a new resolution by the time he heads to New York early next week for the world body's General Assembly.

In Berlin, France's Chirac said: "We must move as quickly as possible toward ... the rapid transfer, under the control of the UN, of the responsibilities of government to the current governmental bodies in Iraq.

"And when I say as rapidly as possible, it is for us a question of months and not years naturally," he said at a press conference with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Germany and France, both vociferous opponents of the US-led war, want the United Nations (news - web sites) to be the focus of reconstruction efforts.

Paris had also called for the installation of a provisional Iraqi government within one month, but Chirac's remarks Thursday suggest he is ready to compromise on that tight timetable.

In a further concession to the United States, Chirac said France would also be willing to help train new Iraqi police officers and military personnel if Germany went ahead with its offer to do so.

"It goes without saying that if the chancellor confirms that position, France will also do so for the same reasons," he said.

General Richard B. Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, said in Hungary the United States plans to train more Iraqi police to improve security, but did not specify where.

While Schroeder made almost no comment about Iraq, Chirac said: "We share the same vision and preoccupations about Iraq and the need to evolve toward the stabilisation and recovery of this country."

France and Germany thought it was important to move away from military-type thinking in Iraq, where a US-controlled authority is in temporary power, and toward a political solution to bring back normality, he said.

"We think that a strictly security-based policy will not help restore security, development and stability in Iraq."

A source in the French delegation said Thursday Schroeder and Chirac have "a common analysis of the current situation," and described the conditions under which the US-British coalition is working as chaotic.

"The situation is grave and there are very real dangers that things could deteriorate," the source told AFP.

Schroeder's only comment was to say he wanted to discuss the issue with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) at Saturday's summit in Berlin.

German government sources said Thursday that Schroeder, who has been left in the diplomatic cold since vehemently opposing the war, will meet Bush on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting on September 24.

Japan, meanwhile, said it was ready to bear "a due share" in contributions to reconstruct Iraq, without specifying how much of the bill it would foot.

In London, an inquiry into the intelligence used to justify Britain's participation in the war continued with Ministry of Defence personnel director Richard Hatfield testifying that David Kelly should have been suspended for talking to reporters about the way intelligence was used to take Britain into war.

Weapons expert Kelly was found dead with a slit wrist on July 18, a week after the ministry confirmed he was the source of a BBC report alleging the September 2002 intelligence dossier on Iraq's WMD had been exaggerated.

Meanwhile, former UN arms inspector Hans Blix told the BBC in an interview that the US- led invasion of Iraq was not justified and that Washington and London "over-interpreted" intelligence data.

Blix had said on Wednesday that Saddam had not had weapons of mass destruction for 10 years before the war.

                                              Slideshow Slideshow: Hurricane Isabel

The massive storm, which generated at least tropical storm-force winds across more than 400 miles as it reached land here, continued to rumble on a leisurely northwestern path through Virginia tonight, threatening to cause widespread flooding from 6 to 10 inches of rain in a region already soaked from an unusually wet summer.

But for all of its size, Isabel, which once packed winds of 160 mph at sea, appeared to be less destructive than forecasters had feared. There were no immediate reports of deaths caused by the storm in North Carolina, although there was one traffic fatality in Virginia.

Property damage, while severe in some spots, did not appear to be as massive as the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew, which struck Florida in 1992, or other major storms.

This was in part because the storm's eye made its first landfall on the mostly undeveloped Core Banks, a remote chain of islands with no paved roads, east of Morehead City. As it moved inland, the hurricane also began to lose force, with its top winds easing to about 90 mph.

But the storm's reach was vast, with hurricane winds extending into populated beach towns 115 miles from the eye, and government officials warned that it remained dangerous, not only because of high winds but also because of the threat of flooding. Cloud cover caused by the storm encompassed about 275,000 square miles.

Here on the North Carolina coast, where Isabel came ashore with its full fury, decades-old piers sagged and heaved before they collapsed into roiling seas. Screen doors, shingles and plywood sheets became dangerous flying projectiles.

President Bush (news - web sites) declared a major disaster in parts of North Carolina, making residents and businesses eligible for grants for temporary housing and home repairs and for low-cost loans to cover uninsured property damage. The initial disaster declaration applied to 26 North Carolina counties.

President Bush rode out the storm at the Camp David presidential retreat in Western Maryland, where he met today with Jordan's King Abdullah II. Bush left Washington on Wednesday, a day earlier than planned, because of the hurricane.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell (D) and New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey (D) declared states of emergency. The governors of other states in the path of the hurricane -- Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware -- had taken similar steps earlier.

As the hurricane moved through Virginia tonight, officials in states to the north braced for its arrival. Preparing for as much as 10 inches of rain in Western Maryland, some people fled low-lying areas.
