| Yowarliny, originating in Perth through the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company was created as a community choir in 1997, to cater for those who sang for the enjoymant of singing. Six years on Yowarliny is now a highly talented group of singers producing commercial Indigenous music ready for national status. This group of five young women all have qualifications and experiance in the music industry, most of their work coming through Abmusic and Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. Yowarliny's music is created and arranged by the girl's themselves and now have the addition of drums, bass and acoustic guitar. Thier music is modern and contemperary yet with an Indigenous feel. Yowarliny's songwriting is also passionate and from the heart, the girls have exceptional writing abilities covering various styles such as reggae, country, gospel and soft rock and yet still creating their own style to cater for the commercial industry. The Coordinator of the group, Della Rae Morrison a Noongar Yorga of the Bibbulman Nation and respected member of the Noongar Community and driving force behind the group for the last 6 years, has an extensive background in acting and theatre:- from Bran Nue Dae to the Vagina Monologues she has toured the country on many occasions. Having a strong passion for singing Della has diligently held the group together to bring it to where it is today. The Music Director, Jessie Lloyd is a post graduate from Abmusic and is qualified with a Cerificate IV in Music, her abilities to arrange and compose with the girls are brilliant and exciting. Working with just acoustic guitar, four part harmonies are created along side beautiful solo's performed by each of the members. The other members involved are Thalia Skopellos, Chinta Edwards and Fiona Moran, these dedicated girls are talented anddetermined and make the group what it is today. The word Yowarliny means 'to sing' or 'to sing out' it comes from the Noongar language of the Noongar people of the Bibbulman Nation - the custodians of the land of the South West of Western Australia. Yowarliny believe that the year 2004 will be very productive for the group as their sights which have been set on producing a CD is finally coming to fruition, they look forward to introducing their music locally, to the wider community and to present their beautiful harmonious songs nationally and internationally to promot understanding in Aboriginal culture. Yowarliny are currently preparing for their interstate tour to Adelaide and Melbourne. This will be happening inthe month of March. You will find the girls performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, at Tandanya Cultural Center, being a support act for Sally Dasty, ex member of Tiddas CD launch in Melbourne at the Cornish Arms and with more gigs on the way, such as Tramways Hotel in North Fitzroy. |

| Yowarliny are in the process of recording their first CD. This project is due to be completed by the end of January and CD's should be available by Feburary. They have also completed a CD with Nyandi Womens Prison in hand with Ripe Fruit Arts Development. This CD was made possible through the nine week workshop with the prisoners. The songs on the album are made up of Yowarliny songs and a song written by the inmates. Yowarliny would like to thank the Dept. of Justice, Ripe Fruit, Nyandi Prison and most importantly the girls who made it happen. |
