Critiques of Cameras

need to edit for clarity

I don't mind point and shoot cameras as long as they offer me control. What I require is shutter/aperture/iso controls. Many cameras offer you shutter and aperture controls separately, and then together in Manual mode. You should also have ISO controls within those settings. I want both auto, in case I trust the camera and don't need to fiddle with it, but in many cases, the camera chooses one you don't one, you should be able to manually select it.
What I do love about point and shoots are their really wide apertures, f/2.8.

Sony DSC-S60

I have the older Sony DSC-S60 4mp camera. My dad got it at a thrift store for $5 bucks. The lens was messed up and he got it working right. I was skeptical of its performance being 1. a point and shoot and 2. being older. I was impressed.

It has an ISO range of 80 to 400. Not that big. My dSLR is 200 to 1600 and I wish it went as low as 100.

This camera has a Manual mode that allows you to change the shutter speed and aperture at the same time. It also allows you to set the ISO to auto, or choose your setting. I love that feature.

What I also love is that when you're in the menu and you highlight a setting, such as a different white balance like "cloudy" the difference appears on the live view screen.

Fuji F50fd

Now, I have coveted for a while now the Fuji F30. I lurk on eBay watching auction after auction for this sweet little camera. By chance I received its "older brother" the F50. The F50 jumped up to 12megapixels. That's double the F30's and my Nikon D70 dslr. The problem with so many pixels is that your tiny sensor should increase in size, but it didn't for the F50.

This camera is slick looking. Its thin though and there is not much to hold on to. I'm used to the older, meatier point & shoots. It's got a huge viewscreen though which is cool, but I'm worried about scratching it more.

One feature I do like is a setting called Natural & Flash. It will first take an auto-exposed non-flash picture, then it will rapidly take one with flash. You can see which one looks better.

It has an ISO range of 100-1600, then if you want to reduce to 6mp, 3200 and if you'd like to go smaller, 3mp will grant you an ISO rating of 6400!

Now for the grumbling. Not all cameras' ISO 800s(or what have you) are the same. You can compare cameras in the exact same light, with the same shutter speed and aperture, and focusing distance, and one may have more noise, blacks less black and less detail. You don't have to do this yourself, DPreview.com is my trusty handy photo review site. Unfortunately they don't have time to test out all the cameras, and they skimp on the point and shoots. Still, check it out.

I am almost certain the Sony outperforms the Fuji. I have been trying to get good test shots for comparison. It's hard since they are of different sizes. Also, I have not been using the Fuji's full 12mp, I just use it in 6mp mode.
