For each entry, I tried to include a link to an informational site about the artist,
as well as a link to other examples of their work.

Big Self Portrait
Chuck Close
ARTCYCLOPEDIA
Big Self Portrait
This is my favorite Close portrait because it was my introduction to his work. I was visiting the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for the first time in high school and was completely taken with it. I enjoy the overwhelming size of Close's work and I'm also very drawn to portraiture. I did a collaborative piece in college - a photomosaic composed of 900 images which together create a portrait. Close was an obvious influence.

Aspects of Negro Life
Aaron Douglas
ARTCYCLOPEDIA
Aspects of Negro Life mural series - (detail)
I was introduced to Douglas's work in an Art History class in college. I love way he uses color variations to direct the viewer's eye around the painting. I recently began working in stained glass and foresee that Douglas will be an ongoing influence as my work progresses, since his style would lend itself very easily to stained glass.

Andy Goldsworthy
ARTCYCLOPEDIA
Rowan Leaves

I first saw one of Andy Goldsworthy's books on a vacation and it was love at first sight. Aside from the obvious beauty of the art he makes, his spontaneous style and ability to anticipate how the pieces will change over time are what I like best about his work. I highly recommend the 2001 film documentary by Thomas Riedelsheimer on Goldsworthy, Rivers & Tides. I cannot overemphasize how great this film is.

Anne and Janet Grahame Johnstone
BOOKS ILLUSTRATED
Monte Wilson's website has a short bio and some images from the books illustrated by the Johnstone sisters, as does the Books Illustrated site above. My favorite fairytale book from childhood was illustrated by these ladies, and so they have sentimental significance for me, but I really love their elaborate use of line and color in the drawings.

Roman Loranc

Purple Needlegrass
I found a book of Roman Loranc's work on a coffee table and just fell in love with it. I love the variety of styles in his prints.

Self Portrait
Narcissus Quagliata
BIO
Self Portrait
I don't know a lot about Quagliata, but I first saw his work when I began taking stained glass classes. His stained glass portraits are incredibly detailed.

Ann Telnaes
www.anntelnaes.com
I first saw Telnaes' work in the SF Chronicle where her Six Chix comics are featured. Those are still my favorite although her major emphasis is on political cartoons. Mostly I love her style - her cartoons are beautifully made, no matter how rough the subject matter.

The Cheat
Brotherschaps
www.homestarrunner.com
I think this cartoon website is terribly clever. It's hard to explain why it's so funny, best to just check it out. Either you get it or you don't. Try the Strongbad emails.
