TRS2LL Frequently Asked Questions

This program converts legal locations (township/range/sections TRS) to the corresponding latitude/longitude of the center of the section. To get the documentation run the program and choose option 5. The following 17 states are covered:

AR AZ CA CO ID KS MT ND NE NM NV OK OR SD UT WA WY

1. Will the program be expanded to include other states?
Sorry, I am no longer maintaining this program.

2. How is this conversion to latitude/longitude done?
Go here to get a tutorial

3. Can the program be used if the name of the meridian is not known.
If the meridian is left out and the state is entered the program will compute the lat/long. However in states that have more than one meridian it uses the first one it finds.

4. Could the program be changed to process 1/4 sections?
It would be a fairly easy change. However it may imply more accuracy than the program actually has.

5.What is the accuracy of the calculations?
The accuracy improves as you go east. For two reasons: First, the program was started in California and I learned as time went on. Second, the sections are much more regular as you go east. I would guess that in Kansas the accuracy is within 1/10 mile. In California 1/4 mile.

6. Is it possible to get the source code so I can incorporate it in my application?
Yes, goto Downloads to get the source. A much easier way to incorporate in an application is by using the DLLs.

7. Sometimes when converting from lat/long to TRS the wrong state and TRS comes up.
This can happen near irregular state borders. For example close to the AZ & CA border. The program has been changed (9/16/2000) so the state can be entered along with the lat/long.

8.What datum does the program use?
According to the BLM maps, it's NAD27
