Hatching of Clutches 4 and 5

Weyrwoman Carah greeted the numerous guests present for the joint hatching of Green Kranth, and White Larnith's eggs. The dragons and various fire-lizards around the weyr had begun their hum around noon, but the eggs were taking their sweet time. Now the sun was low in the horizon and the dragons still hummed. Candidates, spectators, dragonriders, and weyrfolk talked amongst themselves waiting for the hatching to begin.

On the sands, Kranth and Larnith sat protectively close to their respective clusters of eggs. Nearby, their mates, Sparnth and Randoth looked on. Their riders, Ara, J'ram, Vyneera, and Z'ran sat together on the lowest tier.

Gradually Carah worked her way over to M'lek, the weyrleader, and the two took their seats. The crowd was hungry. It was dinner time, but no one dared move for fear they would miss something.

At last, there was movement on the sands. Two of the eggs from Kranth's pile started to rock. Soon, two wet heads burst through the hard shells. It wasn't long before the brown and bronze hatchlings broke free and looked towards the waiting candidates. Slowly they made their way to the waiting boys. Two of the candidates seemed to sand out to the dragonets because once they made eye contact with their chosen riders, nothing else mattered. The brown chose first producing a cheer from a section of the crowd that must be related to the lucky boy. Turning towards them, Alarix shouted, "His name is Jiaruth!" The bronze chose a short candidate with light brown hair. As the bronze came towards him, Daserin couldn't quite believe his luck. Bending to hug his friend, Daserin said, "There's no way I could have been late for this hatching, Grailuth." His comment produced some chuckles from the other candidates who had all been standing there since early afternoon.

As Alarix and Daserin led their dragons to the exit, the remaining candidates turned their attention back to the eggs. One of Larnith's eggs was rocking this time, and to the girl's delight, it was the queen egg. The golden beauty that tumbled from her shell slowly got to her feet. The first thing she saw was nine eager girls waiting for her choice. Slowly, she walked towards them. Sandi looked hopeful untill the tiny queen passed. Saryin thought she might be coming towards her, but the queen stopped in front of the girl next to her. Smiling down at her new lifemate, Tayf told her, "Kallenth, I'm hungry too. Lets go see what we can find to eat."

Four eggs hatched next. Two blues and a green from Kranth's clutch, and a brown from Larnith's clutch. As each dragon went in a different direction, it became difficult to see it all at once.

One blue was attracted to a candidate with brown and gold fire-lizards circling his head. Amused by a silent comment from the blue hatchling, F'nar told him, "Yes, Ulleseth, they look to me too."

The brown had narrowed his choice to three hopefulls on the far side of the sands. When they saw him coming, Dirox, Wilisar, and Taren stood straiter, and projected loving thoughts towards the dragonet. The former Smithcrafter won out when the brown turned to him. Speachless, Dirox barely managed to say his dragons name, "Chipsith."

While the brown was making his choice, the petite green found her lifemate. She didn't take long to brighten Gerika's day. "Ordanth, you've made me so happy," she said as she scratched the green's eye ridges.

The second blue took the longest to decide. He tottered from Kadon, to Vedek to Norin, before returning to Vedek. As Vedek realized the blue wanted him, his emotions rose to the surface. As a tear escaped his left eye, Vedek spoke, "Pareth, you want me?"

Two more eggs from Larnith's pile burst open to reveal another dark green hatchling and another smaller white hatchling.

The white was first on her feet and set off towards the seven hopefull girls with the green close behind. Cordata, Liaran, and Sandi were closest. The white seemed to turn towards Sandi, when she collided with the green trying to pass her. Struggling to her feet, she saw a girl she hadn't noticed before. Slowly she moved toward the auburn haired girl. As she did, the green scrambled to her feet and almost lept upon Sandi. Holding the wet dragonet to her, Sandi said, "Rixith, calm down, I'm not going anywhere." Meanwhile, the auburn haired girl and the white dragon paired up. As they made their way towards the exit, Calate told her,"Januth, you are just going to love my fire-lizards, Sandry and Trin!"

Now there were only three of Larnith's and five of Kranth's eggs left. The gold egg from Kranth's clutch was next to hatch. All five remaining girls formed a loose ring around her in hopes she would be picked. This queen knew right away who she wanted to be her rider. As confident as her new legs would allow, she marched up to the tan girl from Paradise Cove Weyr. As the queen nudged her legs, Alistra looked down into her eyes. "I know what you mean Nepristh, I'm starving too."

Four more eggs hatched at once. A bronze and a green from Larnith's clutch, and two greens from Kranth's. The bronze almost knocked Wilisar over in his excitment to reach him. "His name is Halath," Wilisar announced before conversing with Halath silently.

Three greens and four girls met halfway. It was a hard choice. After looking over the candidates, the green from Larnith's clutch stepped forward first to greet her new rider. A very surprized Karasa announced, "She says her name is Oshrith."

Decisions, decisions. Two indicisive greens huddled together not quite knowing what to do. Tired of waiting, Saryin walked up to one of them and took the small dragon's head in her hands. "Larith aren't you hungry?" she asked.

Watching her sister, the other green gained courage. With one soft foot in front of the other, she walked towards one of the remaining two girls. It was Liaran who reached down to touch the green. "Primith, it's about time."

The last three eggs finally hatched. Larnith's last egg revealed a blue. Kranth's last two were a brown and a bronze. These last three took considerably less time than the three greens. The brown passed by Norin to stop at the feet of Kadon. Beaming, Kadon looked for the faces of his aunt and uncle in the stands, "His name is Garrith!"

The blue looked back and forth from Telson to Taren. The third time he turned to Telson, the boy stepped forward to scratch his eye ridges and impression was made. To his dragon, Telson said, "For a minute, Saffath, I thought you were going to take as long as those green's did."

Lastly, because he was struggling to free himself from a bit if shell stuck to his foot, the bronze searched for his rider. Spotting his chosen, he moved as fast as his legs could carry him, barely stopping in a heap at the feet of the young Ruathan. "I was afraid I'd never Impress, Almedeth," Norin told the newly hatched bronze as he helped him to his feet again..

As the last new dragonrider led his lifemate from the now warm (instead of hot) sands, the crowd followed them out eager for a bite to heat themselves. The sun was just settting, and there was a feast to enjoy.
