Hatching of Clutch 17

Thanks to Mirgan for bailing us out again and writing the story.

The day in the Weyr had began normally. The sun was shining and the dragons were doing what they normally did. The Weryleader and Weyrwoman had slept in late, and awoke to the bugle of the watch dragon's call. They sprang up in unison and called their dragons mentally.  Gold Reanith was the first to answer the call. She knew what the frantic call from Weyrwoman Carah meant. She had also heard the watchdragon's bugle and knew the eggs were hatching!

While Carah and M'lek hurriedly put on some weyrhide clothing, Reanith was busy waking all the other dragons of the weyr. First she called out to Green Saivith and Blue Atlantith whose eggs were on the sands, about to hatch. The pair woke their riders quickly and they started out for the hatching grounds at a fast pace. By the time Carah and M'lek reached the hatching grounds, it was apparent Reanith had started calling to the dragons before Carah told her. The stands were filled with eager weyrfolks. Only a few seats remained, which were snatched up quickly by later people. The candidates were also ready, standing on the sands dressed in their white robes. Each was scared and none were able to hide it.

The candidates shifted from foot to foot anxiously as a cool wind blew into the hatching grounds. The first egg hatched quickly. The stands were quiet as the green looked at the group of girls and then waddled over to the boys group to look at them while another egg hatched messily. The second hatchling, a bronze, immediately spied a boy with brown eyes who had one hand on his knee. The bronze practically ran to him. By the time he got there, a smile spread across the short brown-haired young man as he held out his arms and forgot his fear. "Dovinth! I've forgotten all about my knee! Don't worry! You need food," the boy who was known as Koret said as he led his new bronze off the sands.

While all the attention was focused on the bronze and his rider, the green wailed in grief after being ignored. Soon everyone's eyes were on the green as she decided to go back over to the girl's circle. A girl with blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes stepped up to meet the confused dragonling. "But, Ionath, are you sure? You seemed so confused," Azura said as she stooped down to meet the hatchling. Then the realization of Impression hit her and her training took over. Without a word, she led the green off to food just as three eggs cracked at once.

Two greens and a brown tumbled out of their eggs and quickly surveyed the remaining candidates. Vivacia wasted no time bravely going up to one of the greens, but it pushed pass her and headed determinedly towards the three remaining girls. The other green saw Vivacia's look and ran up to her, butting her in the leg. The green crooned softly before Vivacia announced to Carah as she led the green off to food, "I belive her name is Lyneth!" Carah nodded and Savith smiled a draconic smile.

The first green that had pushed past Vivacia watched the first girl in the group for a second before choosing her. The girl smiled and announced loudly, "This is Sindeth!" Utalia led her hatchling off to eat while the brown still hadn't seemed to decide.

The brown decided to go over and look at the remaining girl, Serria, who shook her head and pointed the small dragon over to the boys circle where four boys remained. The dragon followed Serria's example and wandered over to the boys circle where he stood waiting, as if one of the boys should kneel in front of him. Meanwhile, two eggs shattered and a blue and a bronze stumbled out of their shells, both tripping in unison. The blue quickly righted himself and continued over to the boys while the other brown still stood. Attor saw the bronze trip and stay down, so he ran over to help the poor thing. The bronze suddenly stood up and looked at Attor, who replied to the bronze, "No, it doesn't matter if you fall! As long as you're ok, Brynth. Let's get you some food. That'll make you feel better." Attor quickly led his bronze off to the food.

Meanwhile, the indecisive brown seemed to have made his decision. He walked over to T'nio, but was pushed out of the way as the blue butted him off course. The blue then walked confidently to T'nio who looked startled by the attention the hatchlings had been paying him. The boy quickly said, "Darith, I sure wouldn't want any other dragon that you!" and led the blue off the sands.

The brown that was pushed over looked at Felin curiously as the last pair of new riders were being led off the sands and then changed his mind and ran over to Liaaven. He looked at him for a while as the stands waited patiently for this indecisive little brown to make his choice. The brown changed his mind once again and ran back over to Felin, who somehow scooped the small brown up in his arms and said to him softly, "Grath, why did you choose me instead of Liaaven?" The browns crooned softly in response as he smelled the food ahead.

The two remaining candidates looked at each other sadly and inched closer just as the last two eggs hatched simultaniously.  A large green and an average sized brown rolled out of the eggs and headed right for the candidates. Serria ran straight towards the green with a smile on her face all the while saying, "Shiryth! Let's get food!"

The brown headed for the last candidate who stooped down carefully before falling on his behind as the brown almost ran him over. Saivith, the browns mother seemed to nod her head as Liaaven led the brown off the hot sands. "Lionuth, no, I don't have a pet wherry! That's what the meat in the kitchen is for, silly!" As Liaaven led his hatchling off the sands, the crowd cheered as nine new pairs of lifemates found each other in happiness and lifelong joy.
