Hatching of Clutch 12

Many thanks to Kylar, Wilmseth's rider, for writing the story.

The sands are somewhat wet due to rain from the night before. Green Wilmseth is busy moving her eggs into their final places before the candidates enter the sands. Brown Femoth lands not to far from his mate and their eggs. B'fali slides off his dragon's neck and walks towards Kylar, sitting not far from Wilmseth. He can't help but note that Kylar seems on edge, not unlike most of the female riders when their dragons clutch. The candidates are led onto the sands and take their places.

Two of the eggs start to move, and then roll into each other. Both eggs shatter and a green and a brown end up in a small heap. They try pulling themselves apart. All they really want is to find their chosen ones. Wilmseth watches as the two struggle to free themselves. She knows that she can not help them, because if she does she might injure them. Soon they give up and begin to cry. Two of the candidates come rushing to the aid of the hatchlings. Linor brushes some sand off the brown's nose once the dragon is separated from his sibling. "Varith, you should have asked for help sooner. Now, lets get you some thing to eat," Linor tells Varith as they exit the sands. Wyxa looks down at her new green. Then she turns around to face the stands. "She wants you all to know her name Tyzeth!" Wyxa announces just before Tyzeth insists she be feed.

Three more eggs hatch: a blue, a bronze and a WHITE! Wilmseth has a very smug look on her face, for a dragon. Femoth looks a little shocked too. The white is first on her feet and starts in the direction of the male candidates, but then she runs over to the girls and right in to Rissa. "Celinath slow down! I'm not going anywhere without you," the young woman tells the white. The small hatchling looks up at Rissa. "Yes of course, I'll get you something to eat," Rissa tells her new white as she leads her off the sands.

The bronze is very eager to find his chosen one, but he can't decide whom he wants. He sits down in front of Geicorin and Eithan and looks from one to the other for some time. Meanwhile, the blue runs towards Tomat, trying to stop before he runs into him. Unfortunately, he can't and soon Tomat has a blue hatchling on top of him. The excited dragon looks down at Tomat who is grinning as impression is made. The blue rolls off Tomat and watches his lifemate get up. "I'm fine Genalth, and yes I know you're hungry." Tomat finds himself answering all the many questions his blue is asking him as they walk off the sands.

Through all of this, the bronze still can't decide whom he wants. Finally, Eithan takes a step towards the bronze. In response, the dragon hops up to take a good look at him before pushing him aside to get to Geicorin. Eithan looks a little disappointed, but gazes hopefully at the remaining eggs. "Berixth, I thought you'd never chose who you wanted," Geicorin tells his bronze as they leave the sands.

Two of the remaining five eggs start to rock. One splits right down the center. A green steps from the egg fragments, and she too sits down, just looking at the candidates. She finally gets up after her sire, Femoth, nudges her towards the awaiting candidates. Even then, she takes her time walking to them. First she examines the females, and then the males, before returning to the female candidates. At last, she sits down in front of her chosen one as Dayci laughs. "You sure took you time didn't you? Well, lets get you something to eat. Oh, ok, you want me to tell everyone your name?" Dayci asks her little green. "She wants everyone to know her name is Sigreth," Dayci announces to the crowd before Sigreth starts pushing her towards the smell of food waiting off the sands.

A brown head pops through the top of the other egg. One front foot and then the other emerge followed by both back feet. The hatchling jumps up and when he lands, the egg shatters. The brown walks over to the remaining male candidates and looks them over. He starts to walk over to Tareve but then looks over at Eithan. He changes his mind and runs to Eithan who kneels down and throws his arms around the brown dragon's neck. "Come on Dagreth, lets get you something to eat!" Eithan says to his brown as he leads him toward the waiting food.

At this time nobody is really looking at the other eggs. The sound of them cracking commands everyone's attention again. A blue and green are now in place of two of the last three eggs. They both start heading towards the three remaining candidates when they trip over each other. After they manage to get up again, they start to fight. This is a shock to everyone. The only guess people can make is that they both are going after the same person. The candidates run over to the two fighting dragonets.

Lanikai pulls the tiny green back as Tareve and Deran hold the large blue. "What do you think you're doing! You'll get yourself hurt!" Lanikai scolds her. The green looks up at Lanikai while the dragon's eyes change from green with a hint of red to blue with hints of purple. "What? You want m-me? Of course I'll be you're rider, Zalinth!" Lanikai tells the green, and the two of them walk off the sands.

Deran and Tareve do their best to calm down the large blue before he hurts himself. The blue glances up at Deran and their eyes lock. Tenderly, Deran reaches out and scratches the blue's eye ridges. By this time, Tareve realizes that the blue has chosen Deran. "Ryleth! I didn't think you'd chose me! You have an itch and you want some thing to eat? You know, I can't help you with either of those if we just sand here," Deran talks aloud to the blue before leading him off the sands.

Tareve watches the pair walk off, but doesn't even notice that the last dragon has hatched until he realizes someone is calling him. He turns around just in time to be knocked to the ground by a large bronze hatchling. The bronze looks down at Tareve, with eyes pleading. "Ok, ok I'll get you something to eat, and you didn't have to knock me over Rogenth," Tareve calms his bronze, "Being last isn't bad. The people aren't starring at you, they are just surprised to see you," Tareve tells Rogenth as they walk off the sands. As the stands begin to clear, the people head down to the lower caverns for the midday meal.
