D'nerek and Clarth's record
according to Kirina

First Meeting

I first met Denerek in his weyr. I had heard that he had had a remarkable experience but no one would relate it. They said I had to hear it from him personally.

As I entered his weyr, he greeted me. When I voiced my desire to hear of his tale, he said humbly, "Then you have come to the right place," as he lowered his dark colored eyes for just a moment before continuing, "Please, have a seat."

As I made myself comfortable I couldn't help but notice the high ceilings and dry walls of the cavern. The walls were still bare - understandable since Denerek has just arrived himself. A few sleeping furs were neatly stacked on one side of the weyr. Denerek himself appeared to be in his 19th turn. His sun-bleached, blonde, curly hair was well kept and complimented his piercing gaze. He was of medium height and build possessing confidence mingled with humility. I also noticed that his face and arms were very tan. As Denerek began his tale, I listened respectfully.

"I never aspired to be a dragonrider. My father was a Master Fisherman, and so I learned the craft from him. I just received my Journeyman's knot when I was found on Search and came here for the hatching. I am the second of three children, and the only boy. My family lives in a small fisherman hold just south of Southern Boll Hold"

"My story begins when my father sent me with a ship to fish on my own. I had been out before, but my father's ship was always close by. On that day, he hadn't felt quite well, and so I set out alone planning to surprise him with a good catch. What began as a few hour excursion lasted a lengthy three months. I started out not far from shore, but as I followed the schools of fish, my craft was caught in the strong currents. The wind didn't cooperate that day and I drifted farther and farther from home. Luckily, I was able to catch fish to eat, although for the first half of my journey, I had to eat it raw. My mother had the foresight to send wineskins with me and I rationed them out till I spotted land. When I did spy land, I had no idea where I was. I had to search for fresh water and signs of civilization. That's where I was lucky to Impress Corin, a beautiful green fire lizard."

"I rationalized that the easiest thing to do was sail along the shore until I found a seahold. Luckily, I found one within a few days and was able to determine where I was - Ista Island. The people who lived in that small seahold treated me well. I fished for them for a week in exchange for the supplies I would need to get home. The return trip was just as long, because I decided to sail north till the mainland was in view and then sail west until I got home. I didn't want to risk getting lost twice. Upon returning home, I was found on Search to be a candidate for Dionath's eggs, so here I am."

"Weren't you lonely," you ask. "Yes, and no" answered Denerek, "It was the perfect experience for me to learn who I really am. I had a lot of time to think out there, and if I could do it again, I would."

When he had finished, I graciously I thanked Denerek for his hospitality and returned to the records room to put it on hide.

Clarth's Hatching

It was mid-afternoon when Denerek heard the hum of the dragons fortelling the upcoming hatching. Quickly he dressed in the traditional white robe of the candidates and hurried to take his place with the others.

Denerek was of average height and build. Having grown up in a fishermans hold, he was nicely tanned from an extended voyage. His hair was sun-bleached and curly blonde and his piercing eyes were dark.

The suspense continued to build as the anxious candidates circled the eggs. Soon the shells began to crack and one by one, hatchlings tumbled out to waiting arms.

On Denerek's left shoulder perched his green fire-lizard, Corin. She, too joined the dragons in their hum, although it was a few octaves higher in pitch.

Denerek watched with increased interest in a large egg. Soon, it too cracked to reaveal a gorgeous bronze dragon with damp wings. Drawn to this young hatchling, Denerek made his way forward as the bronze stumbled on shakey new feet towards his new rider.

Clarth

Oblivious to anything else, Denerek heard the soft, soothing voice of his new weyrmate,
"I am Clarth. You, bronze one, are just like me."

Laughing with joy, D'nerek explained, "Clarth, I've just been in the sun. Come, lets find you something to eat."

As D'nerek led Clarth from the hatching sands, Corin soared above chirping her approval.

Day Off

Effortlessly Clarth glided down towards the well known shore line D'nerek had found only a turn before. How different it looked from the air than from a lost ship in the water. Grateful for the experience, D'nerek wasn't at all sure he cared to repeat that absence.

Now, as their circling brought them nearer to ground, Corin, who had been perched on D'nerek's shoulder, launched herself excitedly into the air joining other native fire-lizards. It had been his luck to find land and a hatching nest of eggs all in one day. After all, if it hadn't been for Corin, he didn't know how he would ever have been able to keep up with the demands of his mighty bronze dragon.

Now, a growing weyrling, D'nerek wondered how much larger Clarth would get. Only recently had they been permitted to ride their dragons, and using the story that they were practicing the jumps between to major places, they made time to rest. There wasn't a prettier spot, except what few glimpses he had seen of the Southern continent.

Standing on shore, he ran his hands through his curly blonde hair watching Clarth, Corin, and a dozen or so fire lizards play in the clear, warm, green waters. Quickly removing his jacket and boots, he soon joined them in a refreshing swim.

Cleaning!

Clarth was relaxing in the sun outside his weyr when I passed by, so I knew D'nerek was nearby. Wondering if he was inside, I suddenly heard a laughing deep voice reveal to my mind, "D'nerek is inside - cleaning!" Realizing that Clarth just chose to speak to me, and recovering from the shock of the rare exchange, I thanked him and passed by into the cave.

The state of the inside of the cave was quite shocking. D'nerek had never really placed many decorations up, and the dust on the floor was something else. Looking to be hard at work, D'nerek stood in the center of the cavern with a broom in both hands while a bossy green fire lizard appears to be directing the whole process. She was hovering in the air around his head wildly protesting his way if sweeping as he sent great clouds of dust into the air.

Then, seeing me enter, he paused as he coaxed Corin to perch on his shoulder. "Well, I didn't expect anyone just now, but make yourself at home."

Apologizing for the interuption, I cautiously said, "Looks like you have been working hard here."

Rolling his eyes as if that is an understatement, he revealed, "I only asked Lorin to send up a few fresh glows with one of the weyr boys and she brought them herself. After taking one look at my "Unacceptable quarters" she let it be known that I would be having a full day today cleaning it out."

Teasingly, I asked, "So how did it get so bad in the first place?"

"Oh, you know how busy they keep us here with practice and all. Clarth and Corin and I are hardly here," he said pushing a piece of his his curly blonde hair out of the way. "When we are around, we are usually asleep! What a fine way to spend my 21st Turn day."

"You mean, Lorin is making you clean out your weyr on your Turn day?"

"Yep! She said what better way to make a new, clean start."

Fond as I was of the bronze rider, I decided I had better make myself escape before I got roped into helping.
