The two versions of SAGA each had a different set of core attributes. The original Dragonlance version had eight attributes divided into four groups. The Marvel version dispensed with the eight individual attributes and used the four separate groups as individual attributes. This method not only simplified game play, but it also makes it easier to use standard four-suit decks to run the game.

For normal humans, each attribute is ranked from 1-10, with human average being 4-5. For superhumans, attributes can potentially be ranked up to 20. Each attribute has an associated suit in the SAGA deck. This suit is used to determine Trump bonuses during cardplay. These attributes are described using the associated suit from the suggested rules for using standard playing cards.

Physique - &clubs

Physique covers all aspects of a character's physical strength and stamina. Resisting attacks, poisons or diseases, lifting objects, or trying to drink someone else under the table are all actions that would be covered by a character's Physique. In addition, Physique is the attribute that is used to determine damage that a character causes in physical combat.

Coordination - &spades

All agility or manipulation actions are covered by a character's Coordination. Picking locks, swinging swords, avoiding attacks and dancing are all actions that are performed by using a character's Coordination.

Intellect - &diams

Knowledge and reasoning are the province of the Intellect attribute. Remembering a bit of trivia, figuring out a difficult riddle, using a computer, or other knowledge-dependent skills are all performed using Intellect.

Essence - &hearts

Essence is a measure of a character's willpower and soul. Essence is used to resist mind control, to perform magic (if such exists in the campaign world), or even to resist breaking a diet or otherwise keeping a character's baser instincts under control.
