1. MICHAEL SCHUMACHER (Germany) Ferrari

An outstanding season that he rates as his best performance ever. Nine wins, 11 pole positions and records for wins and points. Only three times out of the top two in 17 races. He benefited from the team.

2. DAVID COULTHARD (Britain) McLaren

His best performance yet in the championship but fewer wins than last season. Highlights include a memorable pole position in Monaco, let down by technical problems. Consistent points scorer.

3. RUBENS BARRICHELLO (Brazil) Ferrari

Played second fiddle to Schumacher until the championship was over. Could have taken second place with a little more luck. Missed his rare chance to win races and should have done better at home, few chances to compete on level terms with team mate.

4. RALF SCHUMACHER (Germany) Williams

Took first win of career in San Marino and then added two more in Canada and Germany, also first pole in France. Only nine points finishes. Also made costly mistakes in Germany and Japan, one to watch in the future though.
5.MIKA HAKKINEN (Finland) McLaren

Two wins but a far from vintage season for the double champion. Let down by equipment but also appeared lacking in motivation at times, high point was his victory at Indianapolis.
6. JUAN PABLO MONTOYA (Colombia) Williams

The rookie of the season. One win and three pole positions, also led several races and stood out for his confidence and refusal to be overawed. A season of two halves. Unlucky not to win third race of year in Brazil, he provided some of the more exciting moments of 2001. Made a big error in Canada but became far more focused afterwards.
7. JACQUES VILLENEUVE (Canada) BAR

Another disappointing season for the 1997 champion. High point was BAR's first podium in Spain, which was gained after Hakkinen's clutch blew, podium in Germany also. Not much luck in qualifying.
8. NICK HEIDFELD (Germany) Sauber

A podium in Brazil and consistent points scorer, quiet but impressive in only his second season.
9. JARNO TRULLI (Italy) Jordan

Very quick in qualifying but unable to translate that into regular race results, lost a lot due to reliability. Only five points finishes with one subject to appeal.
10. KIMI RAIKKONEN (Finland) Sauber

Second most impressive newcomer, handling the pressure excellently! Scored a point on debut, he certainly has the attitude to be a success. Season tailed off after signing for McLaren.
11. GIANCARLO FISICHELLA (Italy) Benetton

Drive to third place in Belgium was one of highlights of season, he made team mate Jenson Button look slow in races and again in qualifying. A commendable season, never gave up despite problems with car.
12. EDDIE IRVINE (Britain) Jaguar

Kept Jaguar in business. A fine third place in Monaco, inherited fourth in United States after Trulli was disqualified. Season clouded somewhat by involvement in accident with Luciano Burti at Spa.
13. HEINZ-HARALD FRENTZEN (Germany) Jordan and Prost

Seemed to struggle with new electronic software and suffered several frightening stalls. Dismissed by Jordan but given morale boost by qualifying Prost fourth in Belgium. Not a season to remember otherwise.
14. OLIVIER PANIS (France) BAR

A strong season and one he can be proud of. Sometimes showed up team mate Villeneuve and uncomplaining despite problems with car.
15. JEAN ALESI (France) Prost and Jordan

Gave his all as ever. Scored all of Prost's points and then helped Jordan. Consistent, finishing 16 of the 17 races. Will be missed by many fans.
16. PEDRO DE LA ROSA (Spain) Jaguar

Took time to find his feet but came good in Italy with two points. Otherwise rarely stood out.
16. JENSON BUTTON (Britain) Benetton

A season to forget for the wonderkid of 2000. Just two points after a struggle with difficult car. Regularly outpaced by team mate but improved late in season, a year to forget for him.
17. JOS VERSTAPPEN (Netherlands) Arrows

Secured vital points for Arrows and highly impressive at starts, when he regularly overtook a fistful of cars. Won few friends for shunting Montoya out of Brazilian Grand Prix.
18. RICARDO ZONTA (Brazil) Jordan

A one-race stand-in for Frentzen. A workmanlike performance but not impressive enough to be drafted in as German's replacement.
19. LUCIANO BURTI (Brazil) Jaguar and Prost

Involved in some awesome crashes. Highly-rated by team mate Irvine but scored no points. Missed last three races due to injury at Spa.
20. ENRIQUE BERNOLDI (Brazil) Arrows

Stood out for blocking Coulthard for much of the Monaco Grand Prix. Had the measure of Verstappen in qualifying but race performances disappointing.
21. TARSO MARQUES (Brazil) Minardi

A journeyman driver who did a regular job with a team struggling to keep up, he was replaced by Malaysian Alex Yoong towards end of season. Looked slow compared to team mate Fernando Alonso.
22. FERNANDO ALONSO (Spain) Minardi

Wrung the most out of an uncompetitive car. One of the revelations of the season even though he came nowhere near scoring points.
23. TOMAS ENGE (Czech Republic) Prost

Burti's replacement. Has yet to find his feet and nothing that impressive about his performances.
24. GASTON MAZZACANE (Argentina) Prost

Shown the door after four races. Never on the pace of team mate Alesi and seemed out of place.
25. ALEX YOONG (Malaysia) Minardi

Finished one of his three races. No points but managed to keep out of trouble.
