On June 11, 2008 a wildfire started very near to our house. As a point of reference, our neighborhood is to the left of the cars below. It is not uncommon to have fires in the field near our house so at first I wasn't too concerned. However it was a windy day and the fire quickly got out of hand. Helicopters were used to take water from our neighborhood lake to help fight the fire. Here are some shots I took the first day. It took several days to contain, burning over 20,000 acres, required over 1300 firefighters from California and Nevada and caused the evacuation of about 9000 people. What I thought was a simple fire turned out to be one of the largest disasters in our area! |
